Hi all. I just got my ering back. I had the top of the band rounded off and it''s perfect. I got to have a really good look at it today until the bright lamp and I can see marks on the top of the stone and was wondering if anyone can tell me what they are.

I am pretty sure they are not inclusions, as I can find the feather listed on the AGS cert, but these look different and MUCH bigger. I can see them with the naked eye if I tilt the stone up to the light. They are not on the table, but just off to the side . When the light hits the surface of the stone, I can see what looks like two scratches. I first thought they looked like watermarks so I popped them in the US, wiped them with a soft cloth and they are still there.

So questions - the AGS cert does say ''surface grain lines not shown'', could these be surface grain lines? They look very big and easy to spot so I would have thought they would have marked them down on the inclusion plot. It''s a VS2, which is eyeclean by WF standards.

Is there a chance that these are scratches that have been made after the stone was certified? It was certed then send straight to WF for setting so it''s not like it hung around for ages, or had another owner.

I guess in a way it''s good cause I can easily spot them now and I know it''s my stone, I just want to know what they are, and if they are cause for concern.

I have attempted to draw how big these marks are, obviously not exactly to scale, but they give you an idea of what I am yapping on about.

Thanks guys for input, etc.

The purple lines are my ones. That little red mark in the feather listed on the AGS cert!

I have a feeling that I am going to look like a dope when someone points out what these things are!!

Hi Honey.

I see you just got your ering back from WF, the best thing in that case is to check it out with them, give them a call. It could be something left over from the setting process, such as a compound for example, but I know if you have concerns, they would rather you called them so they can put your mind at rest.

Thanks for the reply Lorlei. You are right, I just feel like I would be bothering them. I actually had the band altered at Precious Metals here in Melb, so maybe it picked up some compound either during setting or when it went there.

Thanks for advice. It''s funny, when I have a question and I want to get PS advice/feedback before I speak to jewellers etc. I feel like if I am being stupid, you guys will just tell me and keep me grounded. What would I do without PS?!

Honey, no question is stupid, please feel free to ask anything you want!

If it was PM it has just returned from, give Garry a call, I know he too would want you to be happy and ease your concerns. Honestly I always feel that vendors would far rather you ask them if you are concerned about a newly purchased piece, that is all part of the job in making their customers happy!

I do understand how you feel, in as much as you don't like to ' be a bother,' but honestly each time I have bit the bullet and asked about something, I have been very pleased I have!

Thanks so much! I will email them or give them a tingle in the morning. I guess I was worried about looking like a dope, but I am sure they have seen that before. I am sure it hasn''t been damaged but either WF or PM, it will just be something little like compound as you suggested, or surface graining maybe and then I will feel like a duffer!

I really appreciate your help!

Most welcome Honey!

Please don't feel like a dope, we aren't expected to know about these things, and that is part of a vendor's job to reassure clients if they have concerns! I don't know if surface graining would be eye visible in VS2 clarity, that is why I am wondering if it is a little muck or compound...But whatever it is PLEASE don't feel a twit, it is always best to ask so you can thoroughly enjoy your ring!

Ta. I will post back when I have contacted them tomorow.

Let us know how you get on!

I have heard back from Lesley at WF and she assures me that the marks are not part of the diamond, nor where they there when I got it. Now I think of it, this makes sense, as they have another company inspect and confirm the ring before shipping and i am sure this would have come up. So, it looks like some sort of cleaning compound I guess. I will do as she suggests and give it a soak and clean and hopefully the marks will disappear. I am yet to hear back from Precious Metals, but I am tipping that will be their suggestion too.

This is good news, now I know I don't have any visible marks on my stone, but I must admit they did make identifying it rather easy. I still can't find the laser inscription!! I am sure it's there, I just can see it!

Hi again ladies. Lesley suggested soaking it in dishwashing detergent, but I am on my way out the door for a hens weekend and I havn''t done that yet. I did run it through the US once, but only a quickie.

I was reading another LIW thread about how the moment will be somewhat ruined when he proposes if I get too familiar with my ring. I still want it to take my breath away (it still does), so I am putting off cleaning it until after the weekend (and to hear back from PM). I might actually get him to soak and clean it, and I will just give it a quick check. Who knows? After three days without me he might be itching to pop the question?!

Those pesky marks are gone - whew!!

Like Lesley suggested (damn smart woman that one!!), I soaked it in a bath with warm water and dishwashing detergent.

Of course, I then wizzed in through the ultra sonic (I really really love that thing! Best $70 the boy has spent). Warm water, ammonia and a drop of dw detergent. Polished with a smooth cloth, and bam the thing is stunning. I checked it with a loupe (ok, 3 loupes, got those off ebay

)

I was off sick today, so my baby unlocked the safe so I could clean it and sort out the marks. Girls, you would be so proud, I only slipped in on my finger once (to check the marks at different angles), cleaned it and the locked it back into the safe - all under 30 minutes. It''s not mine yet, so I want to be suprised, I want it to take my breath away when I see it when he pops the question. It''s so funny, it''s like I have forgotten what it looks like already! Can''t wait, being very nice, letting him go surfing ALL the time, washing his wetsuit, making coffee and toast - model girlfriend, definately WIFE material!!!

Ok, PS sin - I bought off Ebay!! But it''s really good though. I tried to buy the one that everyone raves about here, the Sharper Image I think, but I had trouble finding an AUS seller, and I didn''t want to have to import one from overseas.

Here is a link to the one I bought, they have a couple of auctions going at the same time. I don''t think you can purchase outright, but they always have a couple of offer. They are brand new and the seller seems to be ok.

I am having trouble logging in to my ebay account, but I am pretty sure I bid $49.00 and ended up paying around $20 postage, so about $70 all up, paid via Paypal, I am very happy. Some nights the bids go lower or higher, but it''s always around this range, if you are not in a super hurry, you can just set your limit and wait it out.

It has the same specs as the Sharper Image, all those little numbers that I can''t remember now, but I am really happy with it. SO knows his stuff when it comes to electrical thingies, and understands all those numbers, and he thinks it should be the same.

Thankyou for the U/sonic link..I don't think there's anything wrong with ebay for this sorta thang, just maybe not diamonds or designer bags!
