Hey everyone,

Please help! Buying the following diamond for an engagement ring:

Shape: Round

Cut: Triple Excellent

Carat: 0.9

Clarity: SI1

Colour: H

Flourescence: None

Price including 7% GST SGD7,500. Is this good?

Thanks for any help provided,

Mark

it's very expensive.

Thanks diamondloveaffair for the very quick response. Does the fact I'm buying this in a physical store that will also be providing the setting make any difference? All together for simple 18k white gold setting it will cost SGD8,000.

Regards,

Mark

You'll need to supply us with a lot more info for us to comment on the diamond. I'm assuming it's rated by GIA since you mentioned Triple Excellent. Can you post the report? Are there any idealscope/ASET images?

As for the price, 7500 SGD is around $6000 USD. For a 0.9 H SI1, I think that's around par with top ideal stones from PS vendors, like these from WF for comparison. Whether the stone you're looking at performs as well as these ones, well that remains to be seen:

For a physical store pricing, it is ok. BUT the stone won't be of the best cut based on the proportions (slightly steep pavilions). This is another reason why the stone shouldn't cost so much.

Hawk, you need to compare apples to apples. H SI1 is not equivalent to H VS2 or G SI1.

Ah sorry dla, for some reason my eye saw H instead of the G for the WF SI1. I agree, it's expensive, but not terrible comparing with other physical stores.

For other PSers, the info's here (so you don't have to download it)

Measurements: 6.17 x 6.19 x 3.81 mm
Table: 59
Depth: 61.6
Crown: 35.0
Pavilion: 41.2

The stone scored 4.0 on the HCA. PSers recommend staying with stones that score less than 2.0. The pavilion is slightly deep. It's hard for us to judge any further without certain tools like an idealscope/ASET to check for any light leakage.

Did you want to stick with the physical store? Or can you open your options to other vendors? With your budget, you can get either a color/clarity upgrade, or stick with the gradings and save some money with another vendor.

My deadline is second week of July, so I'm running a bit short on time. Does buying diamond and setting from different stores open up other complications?

I am currently double-checking the price, at the company's website it seems to be cheaper.

Thanks again and will be in touch shortly.

Mark

You have plenty of time till july. If this store is ordering in the stone from overseas on your behalf, it is the same as getting it from any other us vendors. The difference is that stores in Singapore will require you to lay a deposit up front and offer no money back grantees once you purchase the stone. If the stone doesn't turn out to your liking, your deposit is locked in with them.

The price has actually been lowered to SGD7,050. Does this make it a bit more reasonable?

I am currently shopping at the following website, http://www.vivodiamonds.com

My current requirements are the following:

Round
Excellent/Ideal Cut
0.9ct
H Color (this is colorless to the untrained naked eye?)
VS2 / SI1 (whatever is eye clean basically)
Nil fluorescence

Basically I am looking for a good value eye clean diamond. When buying online, is it a problem finding reputable shops to set it?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I'm not sure if your sgd$7050 includes the setting, but I checked with the guy i got my stone from,
which is basically the best price you can get in singapore after all my months of hunting,
and he can get you a 0.9 E SI1 ideal diamond with 18k white gold setting for sgd$7500.

Measurements : 6.20-6.23 x 3.80
Girdle : Slightly Thick Faceted 4%
Table : 58
Depth : 61.1
Crown Angle : 34.5
Pavilion Angle 40.8
No Flourescence
Cutlet : none

Contact him via http://www.whitedwarf.com.sg/
and just let him know you are Ben's friend looking for the 0.9 E diamond. Cheers.
If you decide to get it from him and want to meet up, we can go together as well.
Although i'm not sure how that would work considering we are not allowed to post personal information. Hahaha

Please note that he doesn't have a shopfront and simply operates out of an office.

As to the value, I think its good, but perhaps the experts here at PS can advise based on the numbers above :)
I put the numbers in to HCA and got a value of 1.4

From what i know, he's going over to meet his cutter soon though, so if you want it urgently you may need to
place a deposit by tomorrow for him to bring it in by this sunday. Or else you might want to take your time to
decide then place the order which should only take a week or two for him to bring it in. Setting will take another week.

As far as i know, other then their signature line, most of Vivo Diamonds stock are also overseas and they bring it in after
you have paid. Not sure about that particular stone you posted though. If you decide to buy it from the pricescope dealers,
remember to factor in the 7% gst to the price as well.

And nope, its not really difficult to find some one to do the setting. Most goldsmiths in singapore are willing to do the setting. Checkout the peoples park area for a large number of established goldsmiths at good prices.

Thanks Adam. I've got in touch and see what will come up.

Mark

No problem, do let us know how it goes.

I checked with him and he said if you can't make it today, the next shipment might be june or july.
So if you miss it, you can consider Jann Paul which is actually a B&M (Vivo is not really a B&M, but operates like WD out of an office,
B&M in singapore would mainly be those retail chains which you see in malls)
JPs prices are significantly steeper, but their stones are what they term "super ideal" and definitely of excellent cut.
(In fact they only carry super ideal for normal round brilliants...)

Either way, do post the scope images of the stone where ever you get it from as both sides do from scope images :)

PS: I noted in your other thread that you are looking at settings as well, but will reply here instead, since this thread is more
about value and price while the other thread seems to be about design which i know nuts about.
WD can copy designs if you know what you want, or if you want your own totally unique and funky design,
JP can actually design it for you. If you get your own stone, JP custom rings start from sgd850 up depending
on design, and sgd$550 up if you get your stone from them. Side diamonds are charged separately and start
from sgd$550 if i remember correctly :)

Please note that if you want custom designs, both sides will say it will take about 4 weeks at least.

Thanks Adam. I visited JP and they are excellent. However, the quality of their diamonds are probably more than I'm willing to pay.

All I'm really concerned about is brilliance and eye-cleanliness. This engagement ring malarky isn't easy.

Mark

No problem !
I hung around pricescope, did alot of reading up and searched high and low around Singapore viewing stones for over 2 to 3 months before i settled on my stone. I too decided that i didn't need a super ideal at the premium it commanded so settled for WD. Just thought i would share my research and help out a little since I don't think many people from Singapore post here :)

Based on numbers it all looks good to me.
I would personally prefer a depth around 62. The depth of 62.2 depth affects the face up size but only very very slightly.
I doubt it doubt the difference would be perceptible if you placed a 61.8 depth stone next to a 62.2 depth stone of the same carat weight...

I agree, Overpriced

 Really ?

I have no idea about the 0.84, but i know the 0.9 should be a pretty good deal.
If you could get cheaper stones, please feel free to let us know where, as we all want to maximise our value :)
Especially at half the price.... 0.84 carat G VS2 Ideal cut (Most of their stones are ideal if not close to ideal cut) at SGD$3,000 ? Thats USD2420...

I think he was quoted the price for the stone only so he should be open to suggestions :)
Anyone have any better deals please feel free to post. If there are better places i still have my wedding band to think about. hahaha.

Nice find ! I'm not sure about his budget as I don't think he mentioned it, but the prices quoted so far were in Singapore dollars. The price of the diamond recommend is usd6607, add in a usd90 delivery, multiply by the exchange rate to Singapore dollars at 1.24, and add another 7% for gst and it's about sgd$8890. And this is already ignoring the cost to wire from Singapore to US.

On a side note, if he decides to get that, Citibank has the best wire rates if you have an account in both countries. I have a sister in the US and thats how we used to transfer money :)

Also, James Allen has free shipping to Singapore, so if he's purchasing online if might want consider looking there if the price is right

Update:
My mistake, saw in the newspapers that usd sgd exchange rate is at a 10 month high. Confirmed with google which now displays a rate me 1.27. Based on new calculation, the price of the recommend stone should be about sgd$9100 instead. Not sure about currency trends, but I think if he's buying online. Might consider doing it soon in case of further increased.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

So even the 0.84ct is expensive at SGD5950?

Round, 0.84ct, G, VS2, Triple Excellent, Nil Fluorescence
Measurements: 6.02-6.03x3.75mm
Table: 56
Depth: 62.2
Crown: 34.5
