I'd posted earlier in the week confessing my doubts as to the value of super-ideal stones to someone like me who couldn't observe their visual impact over less-than-ideal stones. Mara pointed me to a 1.722 H, SI2 from GOG's "Additional H&A" search engine, but that one is no longer available.

I stumbled across this stone today, and though it's a bit more than I wanted to spend, everything I see looks good. Here are the stats:

Price: $11,357.00
Report: AGS
Shape: Round
Carat: 1.740
Color: H
Clarity: SI1
Depth: 61.6
Table: 56
Girdle: M-
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Negligible
Measurements: 7.74-7.79X4.78

Does anyone see any red flags? From the reading I've done on GOG's site, I understand that not all AGS0's will be top performers. That's okay with me, as long as it's a very good performer. What do y'all think?

You need to get the crown and pav angles from WF to know more....also ask for an idealscope of the images. That is also the price BEFORE Pscope discount, WF discounts for Pscope customers. So be sure to ask about that.

Did you check out their 'expert selection' stones? They added a bunch in the last few days around these carat sizes, so you may find something there as well!

If the crown height is between 14.2% to 16.8% and the pavilion depth is between 42.7% to 43.5% you should have an AGS 000. It should be one of the top performers you can get for cut. The price is excellent. I don't think that you will be disappointed with it.

Since it's an AGS certificate, I think I have all the information I'd need from a Sarin, right?

Crown angle: 34.3
Pavillion angle: 41.0
Pavillion depth: 43.3%
Crown height: 15.1%

It is an AGS 000...looks good!

Here's another that is just a tad smaller, but looks awesome:

Scores a 2 on the HCA, and that idealscope looks great!

Good luck

Any chance one of the gurus on here could run a Diamcalc on the stone I posted above? Would this request be more effective if I posted it with a reference to the Diamcalc request in the message topic?

The HCA is funny about pavilion angles that hit the magic # of 41 degrees but I would have to add for good reason in most circumstances. We have noticed that in direct light testing, diamonds where most of the pavilion facets are at that 41 degree mark can contribute to greater light leakage (among Ideal and H&A cuts) but we've called in and tested some that have had average 41 degree pavilion angles that have also been excellent performers. It really depends upon minor facet cutting of the lower girdles (that are inbetween the pavilion mains) and the crown angles that are being coupled with those pavilion facets. A 34.3 crown angles is certainly a green flag as if this 41 pavilion was coupled with steeper crown angles that would throw up a red flag. LightScope & B'scope analysis would either confirm or deny however when you consider the crap being offered out there I'm sure this will be one of the better performing stones in the grand scheme of things.

Attached to this post, upon request is a Gem Reader file which you can open and examine if you have already downloaded and installed the free GemReader program which you can get either here on PS or there is a link to the free software from our site as well. This particular model is with 50% stars and 77% lower girdles which would contribute to a less scintillating, weaker light return mode within this stone, however not bad. The next .gem file I attach will be a diamond with the same Sarin results except with 60% stars and 80% lower girdle depth. You will note stronger, darker reds and the presenece of more blacks which of course contribute to stronger light return and greater scintillation.

Another factor that can greatly vary the results of this stone is a knowledge of the variances which we do not have yet which can disrupt the optical symmetry of the stone. If it is a branded "A Cut Above" stone the chances of this are slim to none since Brian cuts a mean H&A stone. If it isn't then it's unpredicatble how the optical symmetry will be and chances are it'll be chaotic but we wouldn't know without photographic evidence. Hope this helps.

Give WF a call and ask for a copy of the cert and/or a sarin report. ALso ask for some pictures of the inclusions and an idealscope pic. They should be able to provide this. This looks as if it may be a beautiful stone, but I always think you should do your homework on a purchase of this size.

good luck!

Thanks so much for all your help, Rhino! It looks like there are some lingering questions for WF on Monday. BTW -- some of you advised that I get a copy of the cert. It's available on WF's site, which I linked above. For convenience, that link again is here:

1.74 H SI1

I'm having WF call the stone in. They're planning to run a Sarin and provide photographs and an Idealscope. Also, Brian's going to eyeball it and discuss it with me. Is there any other information/support I should ask for? I can't think of anything else they could do, short of a BrillianceScope, which I don't think they have.
