Re: MANY PS Trump supports have come out of the woodwork

Boy oh boy Kenny, this thread took me right to the very very brink of posting something inappropriate in the interest of humor, but I don't think it would have been well received at this time so I backed off as my humor doesn't see to always reach other PSers in the way I intend it. I have really tried to behave in a way that is civil and involves intelligent discourse (although some may sorely disagree with me -- have you see the "racy photo" thread?) but you took me right up to the line!

I suspect however that the real answer is that many Trump supporters were not comfortable being public in their position as the Hillary supporters were being quite vocal on the forum. Now that popular election is over it is, I'm sure, much easier to publicly support the candidate you voted for.

Not comfortable?
Comfort matters more than being authentic and speaking out for what you feel is right and very important? :nono:

Not being straight since birth, I've been 'not comfortable' (in this society of hate) for almost 60 years.

Some-in-the-hell-how, I learned long ago that being your true self is more healthy than living for approval.

No, not everyone.
In 1933 Hitler won an election.
A few people with still-functioning brains did not love the winner.

Kenny, my friend, you'll get no argument from me on anything you just posted. BUT you asked where everyone was before the election and I gave you what I believe to be the answer.

I think this is partially why the polls were so WRONG! People who supported him did it in the privacy of their homes or like-minded friend's homes. They were too afraid to publicly show their allegiance to a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther (credit to HuffPo). Even if they agreed with his hate, it is not seen socially acceptable to be a racist (wonder why!? :wall: ) But in the privacy of that poll booth, they can express their true feelings. Now that he won, well, they feel liberated to rejoice in his win.

Assuming you mean on PS? Perhaps they didn't want to feel ganged up on by the largely liberal membership here who quite frankly has not always been very tolerant of non-liberal opinions; I know as a conservative, I have not always felt welcomed. But really, it's kind of selfish to expect people to feel some sense of 'duty' to announce their presidential candidate to a forum full of strangers. For some, politics is very personal, and they don't discuss it outside their marriage or inner circle, if at all.

Another reason may be that (if I recall) PS didn't allow political discussions for a long time, and only - what a year ago - began to allow it again. If they were entirely gone from the forum for awhile, they may not have known it was no longer a no-no.

With all due respect Kenny, I just don't understand why it even matters at this point. Almost every thread I see about the election is trying to put the blame on someone. First it was the people that voted for Trump then it was the people that didn't vote at all. Perhaps I am ignorant but I don't see what it matters now. Obviously there were a lot of supporters that didn't speak up and make it known but even if they had, their minds were already made up anyways.

I don't see what good it is to put the blame on anyone apart from the Democratic Party who put her up as a candidate. There are even threads being started to call out certain PS members. Why? What's done is done.

I don't like discussing politics much, I stopped visiting PS totally for a while to avoid the nastiness.
I have probably came here more in the last couple days than in the 2 months leading up to the election.

Conversation? Conversations are respectful. They are an exchange of thoughts and ideas. I have not witnessed much in the way of political conversation. I have seen accusations, name calling and plenty of nastiness.

I can be my true authentic self without any input or validation from anyone else. Why speak out when the majority of the most vocal of the PS audience is largely unwilling to consider that there are valid reasons for viewing the world differently? PS has very vocal members who incessantly insist that they KNOW that anyone who voted for Trump is racist, homophobic, ignorant, etc. Because I am comfortable with my authentic self, I don't care one whit that others make assumptions but unlike many I feel no need to try to sway the opinions of others. I choose to believe that members are largely intelligent and decent and, though we may not agree, have arrived at their positions based on their own personal experiences and valid concerns.

I predicted your elections might end up like Brexit just after Brexit, that is why I have been so vocal on here about it. Your country has a large number of disenfranchised people who need hope. They are so desperate for change they are happy to have voted in a racist, sexist, homophobic narcissist that has no experience in politics and no clue about diplomacy. While not all of them are white, stupid or working class, most of them are completely incapable of seeing that a president that comes from a position of hatred is always going to divide not unite your country.

They are incapable of seeing that he isn't someone that has a background in understanding how imposing harsh restrictions on foreign trade could create another recession, because many struggle with their own day to day existence. They don't think about things like China's aggressive moments in the South China Sea, let alone the fact, they have elected someone who again probably doesn't have the skills to deal with that in a peaceful non aggressive manner, because it's not occurring in their corner of the world. When he says he wants to take a strong stand against foreign enemies they believe him. When he says he wants America for Americans they believe him. When he says he is going to make you great again, they buy into that.

Many are poor, or old, or both, they are scared, they are hurting, and so are their families, so that is why they have voted for someone with promises they want to hear, even if those promises are false or cannot be delivered. Many are looking for someone that like them is anti establishment that can offer some glimmer of hope for them and their children's futures. They honestly believe that a billionaire TV personality who is straight talking, is more like them than other politicians, yet in real life Trump and his family probably live a more decadent existence than most politicians and indeed most wealthy Americans. But they don't care, he speaks out against the establishment so therefore he speaks for them. He is a champion of the underdog, of the forgotten people.

I've seen radical Christians overlook his shortcomings, I've seen minority groups vote for him, I've seen smart intelligent people on this forum argue than he will be a better alternative than Hillary....... Why? Because your country needs to change, that part is true. They are coming out of the woodwork now in droves admitting they voted for him, why? Because they are part of a movement of people that want something else. They want to feel like they matter again. It remains to be seen if he can deliver on many of his promises and do so in a sensible, cohesive fashion.

http://www.thewrap.com/did-this-man-get-beaten-up-over-supporting-donald-trump-video/

This video shows a man being beaten because he voted for Trump. There's a mob mentality that people who voted for Trump are wrong and immoral and should be unfriended, so people don't feel the need to explain themselves. What's the point? Also, what does it matter who they voted for since some people are just more private.

Not so sure about that video since the title of the article questions the veracity of your allegation, but I think your point was somehow that this post-election "mob mentality" stifled pro-trump discussion here?

Anyway, to your point, a counterpoint:

http://mashable.com/2016/11/10/shaun-king-twitter-feed/#umwlWitvNkqP

Anyway, I still think my initial inclination was correct. Trump supporters are coming out of the woodwork because their morally bereft guy won the election. Pre-election, some would come here to say it was annoying that there weren't more posts about nail colors and that there were TOO many posts about the election. Could have participated, but chose not to. I guess people tend to chat more with those of the same view point politically, which is fine. I certainly didn't go out looking for any Trumpy forums. This just happens to be the only forum in which I participate, and honestly, I read more than I participate.

I think this nails it.

It's like when you wait so long to make a decision that you get so tired of being in limbo or the back and forth trying to decide that you're willing to just choose anything to get it overwith and see what happens.

I think for others ETA there is no desperation really - but more like just plain curiosity. What ifs. What if we had someone totally different. Not a politician.

And they feel safe because of the checks and balances. And because he'll have advisers. And or because they feel removed and safe, or because they're not in any of the ethnic groups.

Yes it's a couple of things from my post;
1) They are desperate for change and any change is seen as better than nothing
2) They want someone who is seen to be different from "the establishment" they can overlook that he's a D-bag, because he's not like any of the established politicians so they are happy elevating him as their hero
3) He speaks his mind (often to his own detriment) so he is perceived as a "straight talker" and therefore has somehow less to hide than someone like Hillary, so he therefore got the votes of the people that couldn't stomach voting for Hillary because of points 2 & 3.
4) They want to feel like they matter again or their lives matter to someone
5) Trump winning makes a lot of the little people feel vindicated and/or validated

If congress manage to control him none whatsoever. If they don't and he introduces even half of his so called ideas/policies he could potentially cause another recession globally, he could potentially go to war with China, and who knows what he might do in the Middle East. He is a man that has been bought off for example by the NRA to change his views, so until he can prove that he can govern in a calm well thought out manner with some shred of integrity all bets are off.

You are right, there is no conversation Bc Trump supporters keep reiterating that they didn't in fact vote for him, but somehow find every possible thread about Trump to post and to dismiss or excuse every single one of his offenses. At least admit it already.

And I don't get why don't you realize that as repulsive as Trump is to you, for many voters (some voted for him and some didn't) that she is equally, or more so, repulsive to them? I don't remember any PS poster who dismissed his stupid remarks as locker room talk or dismiss them as not offensive.

I feel this way as well Karl. As a near constant lurker, I considered this corner of the web my stress free zone, & my down time to enjoy one of my hobbies. And all the back & forth vitriol nearly destroyed it. Definitely spent more time away than here in the last 60-90 days.

The MSM sure did a number on not only the Trump candidacy but completely obliterated public trust. It defined him & his supporters as 'racist, xenophobic, homophobic, etc etc et etc etc' ad nauseam 24/7. Identity politics to the nth degree. They spent all resources combating his campaign & moving forward will do the same in their destruction effort of his presidency. Now we have all the Moveon/Soros 'protesters'. Ugh, so glad the campaign is over, but the back & forth vitriol, I'm afraid, is not over. Selfishly, I hope we PSer's can get back to our love of jewels & away from all the angst.

This horse has been beat to death. Repulsive as she is to some, she is not president. So the liar and crook that many think her to be was defeated by a liar and crook. We should all be happy.
