Another thread got me thinking about my Dr appointment coming up Friday. I feel I need a mammogram with everything going on and my insurance company agrees.

I realized this is a topic we talk about in life but many of us never really talk about. Please share any advice you can about mammograms. We all know we need every year (and monthly self exam) but I realize I know little else about it.

Different types - pros and cons
What to expect?
Anything to make it easier?
Any recovery after?
Etc. Etc. Etc.

I would suggest a 3D Mammogram - they are able to get better pictures of your breast tissue. It hurts a bit as your breast is put into a vice type mechanism. However, it's quick and they explain each step to you as it's happening. It's a good thing - not much to be afraid of. Wishing you well.

No recovery time needed.

As Queenie says, they squish your boobs in to the scanner, it’s a bit uncomfortable, but doesn’t hurt as such, and it’s over pretty quickly.

Only tip, wear a top and bra that’s easy to get off and on, and remember, that the nurses/techs are doing it all the time, so try not to feel embarrassed, they’ve seen it all before :D

@TooPatient it's very straightforward. A little painful especially for those of us who have small boobs but manageable. Make sure they cover your neck and abdomen with the X ray cover. I just found out about the neck coverage to protect our thyroid. I have been getting these since I was 35 (high risk) and OMG no one ever covered my neck. So please make sure they cover yours. Don't wear deodorant or any lotions etc the day of the mammogram.

And I promise you a mammogram is an easy straightforward procedure. Good luck!
