I would just like to assert that "respect" brings to mind Tony Soprano, the mafia, and my idiot ex-husband who was continuously blabbering on about "respect." So when I see posters here demanding that others "respect" whomever holds the office of President in this country, I cringe.

Okay We will leave the word "respect" out of the equation . However, it doesn't change the fact that a threat made against the WH will result in some unwanted attention from the FBI for anyone other than celebrities it appears. Double standard?

I agree, it is a double standard. Random xyz person makes a stupid crack about it on Facebook and next thing they know the Feds are at their door scaring the crap out of their kids. But xyz celeb makes a stupid comment in front of a much larger audience that is already feeling pretty passionate and nothing happens? Not cool.

I agree with you both (and the article Ruby posted); just more examples of precedents set by some that - if not followed - create the double standard against others.

But as Jen pointed out below (just didn't want to reply to the entire thing), the agent in question said this BEFORE Trump was elected, and therefore prior to working for him (I assume SS agents have some kind of oath or official thing when POTUS changes). So if she wrote in October that she was struggling not to violate the Hatch act b.c she personally supports HRC, and that she'd rather take jail time than a bullet bc she thinks Trump would be a disaster, is that actually a fire-able offense now (months later), after she's agreed/sworn to protect Trump?

If you cannot uphold the duties of your job, no matter who is elected, then you should promptly resign.

EXACTLY! It just feels odd to only have this brought to light now--months later! My guess (based on just my own speculation though) is that it was only recently leaked since it was from her personal FB account and supposedly only up for a day or two before she deleted it. And if it is the case that she had it up for a day or two and then thought better of it/re-evaluated her position on the issue/ realized it could come back to bite her and was said in a moment of anger, then it really is sad that she might lose her job over it. Especially if since then she's sworn to protect Trump and realizes that she (obviously) has to protect the POTUS (whoever that might be), and doesn't feel that way any longer.

Even if she had that thought momentarily, then she should resign.

Being a secret service agent is not a job to trifle with. What would happen if in the line of duty that thought came back, and she was slow to act, thereby causing loss of life.

A very serious job, where you are either entirely committed to it, or you do not belong there.

Hard in my opinion to separate yourself and your beliefs in this situation. Your job is very clearly defined as SS. If there is any conflction you don't belong there. For your own safety as well. I wonder if her intensive training and instinct would over ride her opinions. Interesting (I know we got a wee bit off topic here!)
