I have a couple of diamonds that i am looking at buying. They are all between .75 and .85 cts. I am satisfided with my choises. After i decided on the diamond i have to pick a setting. I think this is harder then the diamond...picking not actual hardness

. ok now to the questions.
1. I dont know what she would like wheter yellow gold or platinum. she has 3 or 4 rings. 1 is white gold and the other 3 are yellow. The white gold is the newest and she liked it but none of the rings are over the $150 mark and only 2 have stones in them. This is because we are in college. i have put away about 1500 for the setting but this is flexible depending what stone i get and if i get some overtime at work. I really dont want to ask because this MUST be a complete surprise and loose lips sink ships. A big problem is most of the designs that I really like are platimum and I am fond of it but it aint my ring.
2. Is platinum resizable? I was told by a friend that it is not but he wasnt sure.
3. How is it durability of it? She is kinda rough on he rings and bends them sometimes.
4. What is better? wire or cast? There wont be much detail probaly a a band with some channel set stones on the side but not sure if this fit into the budget.
5. I heard that it dulls and must be repolished. How offten does it need to get polished and how much does it cost? Can any jewler do it? Also how much does it dull?
6. Is plating platinum with Rhodium(sp?) a good idea or bad idea?
7. what are the pros and cons of a wire transfer? I see some places give discount for one.

I know this is a lot but thanks for any help you can offer.

Okay ask any female friend of hers and they will likely know what metal color she would like. If it is platnium then yes it can be resized, yes it is durable, any jewler can polish it for you. Whiteflash has a lovely platnium tiffany setting that is Tiffany Setting 855$. That is well within you budget. Oh! I was assuming you are looking ar RBs is that correct?

Yeah. I am buying either a H&A or a solasfera.

2.) Platinum is sizable.
3.) Depends on the platinum alloy mix. I find that my 95% platinum, 5% ruthenium platinum ring is my favorite. It is harder than the typical 95% platinum, 5% iridium mix which bends easier.
4.) I love handmade platinum rings. I heard it makes it more durable and I think so too!!

5.) Depends on how the ring is polished. If it is done right, (or done by a good jeweler), it keeps its finish for a very long time. I have two plat rings that were custom hand made with high polish and a few rings that are mass manufactured.... and I have to say, the custom ones keep their polish to this day. (approx 2years old)
6.) I don''t plate my plat with rhodium.. I think you should only do that with gold to make it look white.... and plat is already white.

hope this helps a little. Good luck!!

To know what she likes, perhaps look at the rest of her jewelry...is there more yellow gold etc? Also, of the rings she has, does she wear them all in equal amounts or is there one she particularly favors? Perhaps get a trustworthy friend to do recon...taking her out to the mall and just happen to stop in a jewelry store to look at a necklace or something and see if it can be coaxed out of her.

Also, if you are really unsure, you might just get the stone and place in it a ring box and present it to her as such and then go together to pick out a setting...or let her give you the details if you don''t want to talk money with her.

Another option is if you are going to give it to her as soon as you get it back from wherever, you could go on and get it in plat. or whatever your best guess is and then if she doesn''t like it, return it and have it reset in the metal of her choice (my fiance actually was able to do this with the jeweler he went through...he put it in a "stock" temporary setting and then we had it customed set later).

Are you thinking of a setting with any stones?
