I imagine that about any airtight container would work the same way - I just like the tins because I reuse them every time I get more tea.
I generally make loose leaf tea if I'm drinking it at home or if I'm making it at home and taking it somewhere. If I'm drinking tea away from home, tea bags work (but I'm pickier about them).

TooPatient said:Loose leaf is far yummier. This is most obvious in more delicate teas (gree tea included) where the bags tend to add a bit of a paper flavor to the tea.
Tea leaves should be stored out of moisture. Depending on how long I expect the tea leaves to be around, I'll store in an airtight container or just a ziploc. I get some of my tea from a local Mediteranean market and the rest I order from The Coffee Project. They ship really great teas and I've been quite happy with their quality of both tea and coffee.
The loose leaf (from a quality supplier) is far more likely to be fresh and have been stored properly. (I believe, but am not certain (I read it somewhere but don't recall where), that tea has more health benefits when it is fresher)
