Hello Everyone!

I''m a long-time lurker and first-time poster, and have learned SO much from this site and all you great forum members. Thanks up front for all your help picking out a stone and setting.

My question concerns the setting. It''s a Sholdt Designs Twisp setting in 18kt yellow gold seen here as R206-1P:

http://www.sholdtdesign.com/Rings.htm

My retailer says that Sholdt is having some problems with stones coming loose in other rings they''ve made when the setting is done in yellow gold. They are suggesting replacing the support crosspiece under the stone with white gold for added strength as a solution. I''ve asked them to send some pics of what the final product would look like because I think it might really detract from the look of the ring. None yet.

Has anyone heard of this problem yet? Why advertise a setting in 18kt yellow gold when it doesn''t work? My intended really fell in love with this setting and it''d be a shame to have to shop for another. Any other solutions would be a great help too!

Bob

Welcome to PS Mermidon ! Sholdt do lovely settings, but also for their prices you have alot of options.

I don't understand, why would 18k WG be stronger than 18k YG?
can you post a pic or direct link, I can't find the one you're referring to - what collection is it in?

I don''t see the benefit for using the WG either, but this is the answer my retailer says she''s getting from Sholdt. I''ve fired off an e-mail to Sholdt asking for a further explanation.

The link in my first posting seems to be working fine, but just in case the setting is at www.sholdtdesign.com and it''s under rings, then Twisp collection, and the model is R206-1P.

Hope this helps

Hrmm..odd. Honestly, sounds like someone may have their wires crossed, but lets wait and see what Sholdt has to say.

I''m not sure where you live, but one of the fave vendors around here for settings is Pearlmans http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/
They carry Sholdt, and also Tons of other designer lines. They are very helpful and honest people, and have rave reviews from customers here.

They are worth a browse for more ideas imo.

Thx for clearing up the link/model - I have often admired that setting - but to be honest I can see how there may be potential to lose your centre..not something you wanna have to worry about!
Not sure of your exact taste, but you may want to check out Michael Bondanza @ P''mans - modern and sleek aswell, and very nice quality. PS member Facetfire has one of his rings, and its an all time fave - you can search on her name to see pics.

If you''d like to post a few more styles that your girl likes, plus diamond shape, approx size and metal preference, I will be happy to make some more suggestions.

Yellow gold is softer than White.

Most jewellers will caution you against using YG in prongs as they are not as secure.

Yup usually. The WG has alloys that make it stronger for the most part. Sholdt is a well known company, I would listen to them personally...
