I was wondering if anyone can comment on whether it is okay for the stone to clean the ring in the ultrasonic cleaner tho the prongs are not tight..

We bought her an ultrasonic cleaner also to go with the ring, ....

I told her we'll need to tighten the prongs soon.. but in case she cleans the ring.. will the vibration of the diamond against the prongs break it or crack it??

iwould say its ok.... it will not break or hurt the ring. However i do advice you to tighten the setting as it will fall off given some time.

A piece of advice, if you can do not clean them using the machine too often if your jewellery have tapered or invisible setting. They will go loose after prolong vibration if the diamonds are not set correctly in the first place.

I wouldnt chance it.
The loose diamond will act like a cicular saw blade against the prongs if it rotates.

Personally, I wouldn't use an ultrasonic on a ring I knew had loose prongs. Vibration of the diamond can damage the prongs.

so you guys mean.. the diamond will actually cut and hurt the prongs and it won't hurt the diamond then?

The prongs can/will be cut by the diamond.
As fas as it damaging the diamond I dont know.
I wouldnt think so but crystals can do wierd things under vibration.

Don't chance it, just have her use a small toothbrush and some spic and span or windex in the meantime until you get the prongs tightened (which I would do ASAP).

Do not put a ring with loose diamonds in an ultrasonic. A lot can happen and none of it good. Yes, the diamond will cut the prongs. Yes, the diamond can also get very small nicks around the girdle.
Put that ultrasonic away for a while and let her clean her ring the old fashion way, with a tooth brush.

there is all this talk about diamond scratching the prongs from being lose..

can the prongs hurt and SCRATCH the diamond from being too tight?

My prongs use to be a little loose and then one i accidentally dropped the ring in the sink about the distance of 1 1/2 feet... and then from that day on ..my diamond sits real tight in the prongs.. I think the platinum prongs must have moved a bit from the fall.

Do you guys think that could have chipped the diamond under the prongs? Mine is a 4- prong. and does diamond get scratched easily from the prong metal?

I wouldn't even wear it until it was repaired, nevemind put it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Ok, I can be a bit anal about these things but really get it repaired quickly.

The diamond doesn't get easily 'scratched' by anything. It's a diamond.

However, if you possibly had a feather along the girdle under the prong and you possibly dropped it say on the prong in the sink, then possibly the diamond could chip along the feather running from the girdle from the impact. Alot of possibilities but in reality, chances are your diamond is fine. However, instead of taking my thoughts on it as gospel...why don't you take it into a local jeweler and have them take a peek at it?

If this is one of those department store cleaners (under $50.00) and the jewelry is on a hook, the cleaning will not damage the ring...provided it is just a few minutes. DO NOT allow the ring to sit on the floor of the cleaner for any period of time as it is very conductive and can induce damage.
