The diamond in my fiance''s engagement ring has a VERY slight movement in it - nothing you can visibly see or feel. I think it is a little loose and shifts slightly in the setting when you apply a little pressure with your finger. I think this because it makes a little ''click'' depending on which way you push the stone. She has had it for about 4 months now. It''s a princess stone in a 4 prong setting. I''ve looked at it through a loupe and the corners don''t appear to be chipped (although they are covered by the prongs). It looks like it is in there quite securely too (but I''m no expert by any means).

Any suggestions on what we should do or not do?

If you're hearing a click then the prongs need to be tightened. Take it back to your jeweler to have it fixed.

Definitely get a professional to take a look at this situation.

Id have it checked out where ever you got it. Rings have a break in period kind of like shoes. As you wear a ring the metal does what is called work hardening...every time you bump it, you are ever so slightly alinging the atoms of metal in the ring making it stronger...when a head is soldered on it requires heat. The heat softens the metal and if the ring is droped in water or acid after soldering...it works the metal too dead soft. this is what you want before setting stones so the prongs can bend with ease, then the prongs are cut, stone set and the bending of the prongs over are usualy enough to work harden it back (ever bent a paperclip back and forth untill it broke? thats work hardeing)
It probably just needs a little nudge back into place and a polish.

the other senerio and I hope this is not the case, it may have a chiped corner. this can happen if the stone was maybe bumped into someting on the prong forcing hte corner to chip off, it happens alot with diamonds set inprongs, one of hte reasons I am an advocate of building protective settings that dont stick up high.
If this is the case and your jeweler can conform it, your home owners insurance policy should cover it.

Thanks for the suggestions and replies. I'll have it looked at and keep you posted as to what it was and what it cost to fix it (if anything).
