My boyfriend and I are looking for a diamond for our future engagement. I fell in love with the asscher cut, but we live in RI - a state without any significant jewelers who deal in diamonds. We''ve worked with a small jeweler to get some in, but that did not work - the quality was poor for the stones the jeweler selected. Now, we are working with a chain, but my hopes are not high that they can get any of ''their'' diamonds to the store for us to see (as with most, their inventory seems to be virtual). The manager has a concern about bringing more than one or 2 in at a time (we have asked to see 4).After doing quite a bit of research, I think that might be the way we want to go. I know it requires paying a premium, but at least those don''t seem to have the poor symmetry, light leakage, and dark spots that plague the many we have seen thus far.

Can you offer us some guidance on the options? We have become quite familiar with the specs on the Royal Asschers, as well as the premium paid for them. However, we also hold out the possibility that perhaps someone else is cutting a non-branded version that provides the ice and fire we like so much in the RAs. Do you have any suggestions for us? Retailers seem hopelessly undereducated and even resistant to our search.

First of all, do you have a range of specs (size, colour, clarity) you're looking for and a budget?

I know that Jon at www.goodoldgold.com often has some amazing Asschers, and recently they've been able to source some 5 step pavilian stones (that look close to an RA) for PSers, as does, www.jamesallen.com - but some of the experts on PS can help you start hunting for specific stones if they have a better idea of your minimum and ideal specs.

First off sorry for the typo in the Title (Asscher Cut)

Thanks for the interest

We are looking for a Asscher cut 1.0 to 1.25 ct excellent cut (Ideal), color D to I, clarity IF to VS2, GIA certificate, depth and table to maximize brilliance, symmetry excellent, polish excellent and budget around 4,000 to 7,000.

Royal Asscher has a 5 step Pavilion, a a lot of the other we have seen have a 3 step Pavilion which is better?

neither is better, one can look like the other.

Easiest way call GOG linked above and have Jon pull some in for videos.

Hi bright&shiny!

I am also in RI and do agree with the lack of great jewelers here. My only suggestion is maybe try Baxters on Jefferson Blvd. The owner there who is an older guy seems like he knows what he is doing. Hudson Hawk bought her ring and earrings from them.

The other suggestion I have is maybe taking a trip up to the jewelers building in Boston. It really isn''t that far and there are a few people up there that have stones that you can look at. Alj and I have seen a few nice asschers up there. I see if I can find some pics we took.

If you need an Idealscope I have one and can let you borrow it.

Good luck!
