Please help guide me in choosing a good diamond in the range of a shy carat to shy of 1 1/4 ct. I would like a good balance, but have a leaning towards size. I admit I feel I have to try to compare with her two sister''s (one who is an identical twin) rings. They both supposedly have 1 1/4 ct (unk. cut, clarity, or color) in platinum settings.

What I am thinking about is a range of a shy carat SI1 H color in an ideal to excellent cut (or class II cut) to a shy 1 1/4 ct SI1 I color in class II cut. My budget is about $ 5,200. Do I have reasonable expectations? And what would you suggest?

no thats not reasonable.

I agree with strm - having just searched for the same thing for myself, you're looking at J/K and Si1/si2 if you want best cut for that price. (regarding the 1.25 mark - about 0.9 you should be ok..)
Thats totally cool with me, but may not be for you?

If you want to keep up with the Jones, I guess you''re going to have to come up with more money. Is that really what she wants?

oh yeah, Mike -Please do not buy depending on what her friends/sisters have! Sure, social circle is an important part of this decision, but you should dictate a size depending on 1) your budget 2) what she likes and 3) what size looks good on her finger.
Also, platinum doesn''t suit everyone, and many people would argue it isn''t worth the extra $$ (I''m one of them..)

Go with the metal that suits Her tastes, skin colour and lifestyle. do a bit of research here on platinum vs gold threads - there are pros and cons to both, but neither is "better" than the other, imho. This prestige that platinum has gained is in part due fact but alot due to sales pitch..

Also, without knowing the cut of her sisters''s rings its hard to say - but if you concentrate on getting the best cut your money can buy I''m positive your 1ct will whoop their 1.25''s butt!
