There is a really specific setting I''m looking for that is a combination of all the things my girlfriend likes. Here''s the list:

1. Tapered shank as it gets closer to the center stone.
2. Channel set
3. "surprise" diamond on the profile
4. rotated 4-prong setting similar to this (she likes this because it makes a round cut look more round)

Has anyone seen a setting like this? I can''t seem to find anything close to it except for the one in the link.

Thanks in advance!

The bow-tie setting is pretty and definitely incorporates 2 of your 4 elements (the channel-set diamonds and tapering band). For all 4, you may have to go custom. I can''t see the link because I don''t have the right flash player or something, but I assume you''re referring to the 4 prongs being rotated 90 degrees (called "kite set" when used with a square stone, not sure about a round). Has she considered that a 6-prong setting would make the diamond look more round, and that any 4-prong setting will make a round diamond look more square? A six-prong setting would be easier to find...maybe not with a surprise diamond (they''re usually seen on 4-prong settings), but possibly with the other elements. For surprise diamonds, check out Scott Kay. This SK setting is somewhat similar to the bowtie except the diamonds are pave set and within the bands rather than between them as a channel. Most channel-set bands that I''ve seen do not taper toward the stone, but some pave settings do; so maybe consider going with pave instead of channel.

If you end up going custom, I recommend WF. I had WF custom-design my setting and it turned out great; their workmanship and customer service are really top-notch.

thanks, i think kite setting is what i''m looking for. here''s what i was talking about.

as for 4 vs 6, she likes how 6 makes the round look more round, but wants less prongs so she can see more of the diamond.

Ah, I see; that''s what I was thinking of. I think you''re probably best going custom if you want to incorporate a surprise diamond, since it will be tough to find a rotated/kite setting with surprise diamonds. Also, it looks like the melee diamonds in that setting are pave rather than channel-set; is that OK with her?

Duke000088 was in the other day posting about his custom ring WF was making which is very similar to what you've described. The prongs would definitely need modification, and I'm not sure if the top view tapers enough, though the profile tapers nicely. Here are the images:

Good luck!

wow, that one is what i''m looking for. if it was tapered and had the kite setting it would be perfect. does anyone have pictures of a round stone in a kite setting?

jstarfireb: she''d rather have a channel setting so the individual diamonds are more visible.

Yup that''s my ring up there! It''s coming along nicely from the folks at Whiteflash as we speak.

My original inspiration was actually from the "Hand Engraved Legacy" from Knox Jewelers:

Check it out too. It tapers more than my CAD design although a second iteration is being worked on which should increase the taper.

Also, check out Whiteflash''s "Flush-Fit" diamond setting. It''s similar to what you describe.

Good luck -
