I am looking for recommendation to a local jeweler in the California, San Jose area. I currently have an engagement ring tiffany style in platinum. fiancee wanted something little fancier so we picked up something from Shane Co. locally, but their setting price is close to 700, I want to shop around a bit just to see what my options are...

also, i sure can''t tell the difference between a tiffany style setting vs a regular presentation style setting, anyone?

A setting for $700 in platinum? I don''t think you could do any better than that for a quality setting. It''s on the cheap side for platinum. How much were you thinking to spend? You could spend less in whitegold, but not in plat IMO.

no, what i meant was "setting" the diamond on the ring is another 700. the setting itself cost around 3k.

That is a crazy setting fee...

Have you checked Whiteflash.com? They do a wonderful job and have beautiful settings...not local, but they are very very well known.

Hi,
I''m in San Jose and last year had Willow Glen Diamond Company on Lincoln Avenue set my diamond in platinum. They were really professional and allowed me to sit and watch the setting (3+ carat stone, so I really wanted to watch!). The owner, Terri, took the time to help me choose the prongs to set into my existing plat setting and had her highest skilled jeweler work on getting the ring ready. I can''t really remember, but I think that the setting cost and new prongs were approximately $300.00
The owner also is a "Diamond Certified" business - which means that they had to have passed the highest quality of customer satisfaction.

Oops, hate to threadjack, but you should feel guilty posting about a 3+ carat stone and not having any pictures to show for it.

Naughty girl, you must rectify this situation immediately!

OK! That''s makes more sense now. Well, not the crazy setting fee, but your shock reaction to it. I understand now! We are a little slow here in Australia, being upside down and all

Yep, I would say that''s pretty crazy just to set the stone, considering the setting is $3k. I would shop around too, but not necessarily take the cheapest quote, you want to be sure they will do a good job. I am sure you have it sorted, but make sure that rock is insured before you have it reset, 99% of the time a jeweller won''t insure another stone put into their setting ie. you would need to have the stone set at the same place you bought it for it to be covered, or have your own insurance for it

Good luck with your search and don''t forget to post pics when you have it done!!
