I just want to start by saying this website is great and provides tons of useful knowledge. I''ve been looking for an engagement ring for over a month now and I have not had much success. I recently have been working with a jeweler who was referred by a friend. The jeweler showed me an uncertified stone which looked very nice when I saw it about a month ago, but I wasn''t comfortable buying an uncertified diamond. So the jeweler sent the diamond to GIA and the grading report just came back and the specs are shown below. The table percentage, crown/pavilion angles are way out of line from other diamonds I previously looked at. With the minimal amount of knowledge I have and also a HCA score of 3.7 the diamond doesn''t look too promising! The HCA grades fire and scintillation as fair so I was wondering how that translates to the actual "appearance" or "performance" of the diamond? My gut tells me this probably isn''t such a good diamond to buy, but any input would be greatly appreciated!

Measurements: 7.40 - 7.52 x 4.40 mm
Carat Weight: 1.46 carat
Color Grade: I
Clarity Grade: VS2
Cut Grade: Very Good

Depth: 59.0%
Table: 62%
Crown Angle: 30.5°
Crown Height: 11.5%
Pavilion Angle: 42.0°
Pavilion Depth: 45.0%
Star length: 55%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Thin to Slightly Thick, Faceted (2.5%)
Culet: Very Small

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None

Three things would stop me from buying this stone.

1. The 'good' symmetry
2. I'm not a fan of large tables, but this is purely personal preference
3. A diamond with a shallow crown and steeper pavilion will be more inclined toward bright white light return than dispersion. I like fire, and so prefer the enabling steep crown and appropriately shallow pavilion combination.

When I say "shallow", though, I'm thinking 32... 30.5 is really shallow.

Hi Matt

This isn't a well cut diamond unfortunately, the table is very large, the crown angle is shallow with a very steep pavilion angle, not a good combo. You can do much better than this diamond. It would probably show table glare and have a bit of flash and bang in some lighting, but get it in everyday lighting conditions and it probably would go flat and not do much. Also the diamond would probably not show much in the way of fire or coloured light due to the proportion configuration.

Yssie 30.5 is shallow but in the non PS world not terribly so. One thing to watch if a shallow crown is combined with a very thin girdle, these need expert checking to make sure between them they aren't causing a durability issue.

yap, way off for an engagement ring. Good spread though, but sacrifice fire for it. Fire is the color light return where the white light is being disperse by the prism.

I appreciate all the information everyone has provided so far! It seems the consensus is to pass on this diamond (which was my initial feeling too after reviewing the GIA report), but I''m a little confused because the jeweler thought this was a beautiful diamond (before the GIA report came back). I initially trusted the jeweler''s judgement because I saw engagement rings my friends purchased from the same store, but now that I have the GIA report in front of me I don''t know how these dimensions/percentages/etc. could translate into a "beautiful" stone? I''m going to look at the diamond again because I previously setup the appointment and I am really curious to see if the jeweler''s opinion changes with the GIA report. If anyone could provide any additional insight it would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, it is a diamond so beautiful is a good general description. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder than this might very well be the most beautiful stone he has in inventory in your price or size range.
What is he to say? This is an ok piece of carbon you should strongly consider buying if you can''t find something better down the street. In any case, I suspect beautiful is the more accurate of the two descriptions.
