Looking for help... Tiffany diamond scoring 4.0 on HCA...?

I know. I've known it's yours every time I posted it. I usually actually credit you with it (if you look up Gypsy Cliff's Notes you'll see the other times I"ve reposted it with credit to you), but this time I was in a hurry. My posting this week has been rushed as I've been using it as a much needed break from reality. It's been a bad week. I have a grandmother on life support (that we might be pulling tomorrow) and a mother with possible lung cancer, and a husband with a weird and bad foot infection that can spread systemically if he doesn't take care of it (and he's not been doing so) and a broken ankle of my own. You can't make this stuff up.

Wow Gypsy. My thoughts with your grandmother, mother and whole family. I hope this week, and the future, goes in the best direction for everyone. You're right, you can't make these things up. My mortality has been staring me pretty hard in the face these past few years due to similar family circumstances. When we're young we just want to grow up... why was I in such a rush?

On the other topic, no worries and no need to credit. I'm just being my OCD-self.

Thanks all for your help and advice. I appreciate it all!

Farmer gal: Yes, after doing a very informal "survey" (well, more like bringing up the topic passively in conversations "Oh, that's a beautiful ring! If you don't mind me asking, where did your husband find it when the right time comes for me to shop around?") of her friends and sis-in-laws, several of them do have rings from Tiffany's. And as my guy friends (even the financially responsible ones) have warned me "good luck... Women will always talk and compare... You're stuck getting the Tiffany's..."

Although I'm 100% positive she'll say "yes" even if I give her a CZ, I do want her to be able to hold her own when inevitably the friends and family ask where it's from.

As a side note though, one of her friends has a large rock from Costco, but it doesn't dazzle... Without saying anything, we were both kinda wondering "where's the dazzle and wow factor?" so she's told me she doesn't care about size, just the quality and prescence.

I am looking for an 1.00-1.10ish F/IF... Yes, I read all about why I shouldn't be buying that and should go for GH/VS1 because I can go bigger or cheaper... But she doesn't want bigger and I'm ok with the one-time rip-off I'm paying T&Co. But if I'm paying a premium, I want an excellent stone... Not a poor performer.

I'll keep calling around. I'm in Canada by the way, so I haven't tried calling a US store since I don't think they ship to Canada, but the T&Co stores here can request them be transferred internally.

Many, if not most, reputable stores will not have a problem shipping to Canada, although there is the customs gamut to run.

More importantly, as is marked in red above, she has given you implicit even if not explicit permission to shop around.

She may even enjoy saying something along the lines of, "Oh, we were going to go to Tiffany's, but they could not give us the quality of cutting that we expect for the premium that they charge."

Of course she is probably way too polite to say that,

I applaud your taking the time to educate yourself about your potential purchase. It must have been very frustrating to realize that Tiffany's was not giving you what you should expect or deserve, and yet, how much better to find that out before you made the purchase?

I wish you well in your search and know that with the resources available here at Pricescope that you will have no problem finding a better stone for less money.

Wink

P.S. Let no one convince you not to stick with your plan of F-IF or better. Yes, you can provide a stone that looks the same, but this is a symbol of your love and respect for your intended. Since you have the means to give your perfect lady an Internally Flawless gem as well as the desire to do so, then treasure the moment and create one that will be truly special for her.

Interesting difference on viewpoints John.
From where I sit the "cliff notes" being offered without the addition of the fact it's just someone's taste moves it from helpful to a hindrance in people's search.
I also agree with Wink- and it's really the same type of thing.
I might think F/IF is not the right grade compared to a D/VVS- but actually I don't and again, that's really taking an opinion and making it into a "rule"

Dag- best of luck! By all means keep your eyes open and look at a lot of stones.

Re: Looking for help... Tiffany diamond scoring 4.0 on HCA..

I don't think anyone was trying to convince him to not go with F, IF for any reason other than that he seems to want a Tiffany diamond that meets ideal cut specifications and getting all four of those things to line up in the same diamond is fiendishly difficult, especially if he wants to propose soon. If he broadens his parameters, it will be easier for him to find a diamond that meets the ones he seems to be saying are dealbreakers (Tiffany + ideal cut). If all four parameters are dealbreakers, it's going to be a much harder and longer search - not anything close to what seems to be the common dream of walking in to the store and picking out the ring and that being the end of it. If he just wanted to go to anywhere that carried ideal cut diamonds and get an F, IF in a Tiffany-style setting I don't think anyone would dissuade him unless he started complaining about how much it costs.

Re: Looking for help... Tiffany diamond scoring 4.0 on HCA..

Gypsy: My thoughts are with you. I hope things turn around for the better for everyone near and dear to you. My gf's dad just got diagnosed with cancer 1.5 weeks ago and just got admitted to hospital for sepsis. It's not looking good for him. Just hoping things can turn around for him as well.

Distracts: No, I'm not complaining about the price. I know what I'm getting myself into. But there's a reason why I'm not looking for a 2.00ct D/IF or even a 1.00ct D/IF... I can't afford those so I won't even go there.

I got the labs for a couple more stones I want to ask people's opinions about (especially the ladies) and see what they would prefer:

Round Brilliant 1.04 F/IF
6.45x6.48x4.05mm
Fluorescence: None
Cut: Excellent
Sym: Excellent
Polish: VG
Depth: 62.6%
Table: 56%
CH%: 15.6%
CA: 35.3 degrees
PA: 40.9 degrees
Girdle: med to slightly thick
Cutlet: None
HCA: 2.8 (VG/VG/VG/VG)

OR

Round Brilliant 1.10 G/IF
6.71x6.74x4.08mm
Fluorescence: None
Cut: Excellent
Sym: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Depth: 60.7%
Table:55%
CH%: 15.2%
CA: 33.8 degrees
PA: 40.6 degrees
Girdle: Medium
Cutlet: None
HCA: 0.6 (Ex/Ex/Ex/VG)

The HCA predicts the second one should knock the socks off of most people for blingyness (I think I just made up that word) sacrificing only colour slightly (G vs F).

I want to take cost out of the picture as a consideration, but for those who want to know, yes, stone #2 (G/IF) is quite a bit less expensive. Just from saying that it almost seems like #2 is the best choice hands-down, but wanted to get other people's opinion as well.

Thanks everyone!!!

Thank you so much Dag. They unplugged my grandma today but contrary to what the doctors said she didn't pass, she's breathing on her own. Still she heart and liver and lungs are compromised so I know she won't last long, at this point I am just hoping she wakes long enough for me to say good bye for real. To tell her I love her one more time. My mom's cancer test results aren't back yet. 15 years she's been in remission with lymphoma, so if she has a new cluster, hopefully it will be easily operated on and removed. It's been a rough week or so.

I'm so sorry to hear about your GF's dad. My thoughts and prayers are with them in this difficult time.

Re: Looking for help... Tiffany diamond scoring 4.0 on HCA..

Dag, if I had to pick NOW, from the 3 you have posted, I would pick the 1.10 G/IF. It really has a nice spread. I'm not sure how much time you have left for searching, but if you're out of time, that would be my pick.

Re: Looking for help... Tiffany diamond scoring 4.0 on HCA..

I am very sorry, too, Gypsy. {{{hugs}}}

Dag, I love the G IF and I think a Tiffany's ring will be very special for her! I went the route of getting the reproduction, but I do have a real Tiffany wedding band. She is going to love it! :appl:
