Can someone help me find a truly GREAT stone? I'm loking for a D color and VS clarity about 1 carat round stone. Must have IDEAL cut with H & A and AGS0 proportions with no florescence. I would like to put this stone into a tension style setting. Do I have to purchase the stone and setting from the same person or can I purchase them separately? I understand from past threads that you have to be very experienced with tension settings and not everyone can do them? Would consider dropping to E color and SI1 if the stone is REALLY clean.
Budget is about $4k - $5K for stone. Can this be done?
Any comps?
Thanks...

For D-VS carat-size stones I think you'd be looking at the secondary market in that pricerange. New over the net it sounds more like something 0.8x.

Whiteflas 'expert selection' and the collection at "DirtCheapDiamonds" might help with this one.

D/E-SI, probably a bit under 1c might do the trick here, esp. if you would rather focus on the optics of the stone not the standard H&A or AGS0.

The usual way to deal with tension settings is to send the stone to the company providing the setting or to have the seller of the stone do this for you. I would not readily trust a non-specialist with setting this one.

Also, you may want to inquire wether the maker of the setting you want will take your stone or only use theirs - with the second option being common.

You'd have to check with the company doing the tension setting because I'm not sure you can put an SI diamond into a tension setting. Also you will most likely have to drop down in color to get a 1ct stone for your price range.

I guess the story about SI and tension is right. You might want to ask this specifically and, on the forum, "Boonerings" is the expert.

Just in case....

Actually, F/G-VS2 would do the trick keeping the look no-excuse white, clean and bright

, I suppose and you may find interesting the comment on 'Good Old Gold" that more 0.9-0.99cts stone sare available but unlisted. There do not seem to be too many option in these sizes to begin with!

Why do I need to go better than an SI1 clarity for a tension setting, and where would I need to be?
I don't want to sacrifice anything lower than E color.
Having said that what would be the price range of the stone around .95 - 1.10 carats top, top stone H & A ACA?

I think if you ask one of the dealers the more general question what is "list" for D-VS1 and D-VS2 you'll have a ballpark idea for top h&a. I think it's something on the order of $9000 for a carat.

Since you'll go under a carat I think this 0.96 D-VS2 is close to what you're looking for at $6000.

I've never done business with R&T but they have the "pricescope seal of approval"

, and they're nice folks to talk with.

Actually, you can go SI1 in tension settings, providing it's the right SI1.

The caveat is this: There cannot be any feathers on the girdle. The tension set ring puts pressure on the diamond on the girdle, and feathers could compromise the integrity of the stone to withstand this.

If you got an SI1 where the inclusions are all in the middle, that would be fine.
