Hi everyone

Loooooooong time lurker, first time poster (finally!!!) My boyfriend gave me the green light to shop for my engagement ring! so happy it wasn't a surprise or anything, I definitely want to pick it out myself! I have a 15-17k budget, and I love princess cuts (but after all the reading here I'm kind of concerned that they are dated or old fashioned?) I definitely don't want a round. I want to buy online but my boyfriend wants to see the stone in person and buy from a jeweler. I'll try to convince him otherwise, or I'll have the jeweler order the stone in store. I want to reserve 2500-3000 for a pave setting in platinum, which leaves me 12000-14,500 for the stone. I'm looking for a princess (or a cushion, which I also like). I have learned here that cut is everything, but I'm also looking for value, I just want something thats white and that sparkles. I'm no expert and neither is anyone in my circle, so while I want it to be a brilliant stone, I'm ok with not paying the premium for an ideal cut. Help me shop around? Whats the carat weight I should look for? I think I am happy with I and above for color, beyond that I'm open! Thanks in advance

Re: yay time to find an engagement ring

oh, also, is a platinum setting better than gold/

First decision: princess or cushion? (Yes, princess cuts have somewhat fallen out of favor, while many beautiful branded vintage and modern cushion lines have become desirable in recent years. But it is ultimately your decision.) That will narrow the search down.

Two of my friends are recently engaged and both have BEAUTIFUL princess cuts. They are both trendy, fabulous people. I think you should get the cut that you prefer most!

ok I think i'll stick to princess then! I like cushion too but I have always wanted a princess cut

hopefully i can make it look current and trendy

Have you considered the Solasfera Princess? It's a slight variation and quite beautiful. This Good Old Gold video shows a Solasfera Princess next to a regular Princess. Both AGS Ideal for light performance.

Interesting comparison. Both great looking, and great values. The GOG has 3 chevrons, while the James Allen has 4 chevrons. Explained in the link above, but basically the more chevrons the smaller the virtual facets one sees.

In real life the GOG should have a slightly more chunky flash, while the Allen a slightly more splintery flash.

Maybe request a video of the GOG to see how it looks moving around?

Thank you danielxlin for all your help!

While I'm considering these stones, does anyone have any suggestions for princess stones in this price range? Also, I do love them, but are they completely outdated and unpopular?

Buy what you like and think will love for many years down the road, not because it is trendy now or whatever. Demand for certain shapes come and go. Marquise were once the rage, and then became dated, but some posters here on PS still love the shape and do not care whether it is trendy or not.

Buying a great princess is trickier. I'd stick with premium branded lines. White Flash, for example, in its A Cut Above ideal cut line, has a number of princess cuts in your price range.

1.7 carat G/SI1 for $12,586
1.7 carat H/VS2 for $11,980
2.03 carat H/SI1 for $15,739

You probably want to go for the two carat stone, if in budget. Princess cuts face up rather small. The SI1's little feather doesn't bother me.

Comparison: the White Flash 2 carat has the AGS-O ideal performance but a more prominent feather. The GOG two carat cited above has slightly worse light performance at AGS-1, but its inclusions are tucked away in a corner, a better SI1. Tradeoffs!

Any shape can be outdated except for rounds.

I agree with Chrono, buy what you like. I'll also add pick what makes your heart sing. My husband got me a princess cut diamond for our 10th anniversary (20 years ago). I still love it as much today as I did the day we got it. The setting may look a bit dated but I really don't care. Would I ever change it - never. I've bought many diamond rings since that one but every time I look at this ring I remember how my heart did flip flops when I first laid eyes on it. My original engagement ring (round brilliant) looked more dated and I ended up having it reset two years ago. I think the setting you put the diamond in will date the ring more than the shape of the diamond (at least that is my opinion). Good luck with your hunt and look forward to seeing pictures once you choose.
