Looking for e-ring advice

Hello PriceScope people. I'm looking for a diamond for an engagement ring and although this lovely website has been incredibly useful and educational already, I'm still nervous about picking the right one. My intended and I found a great setting together at a local B&M jewelry store, which needs about a 2ct diamond. This store is of course eager to sell me a diamond as well and I've already got a deposit on one they showed me (along with others in the same price range). I googled the GIA # and actually found the same stone listed here:

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R200-1YLBHM

This includes IdeaScope and ASET images among others. HCA is 2.4. I'm not sure how they can list it since they obviously don't have it (I've looked at it in the store several times). Anyway, the store is asking $20,100 for it, significantly more than the website above ($17,070). It's SI2 but it does look good with the naked eye to me (but I have zero experience looking at diamonds). Still, the price difference compared to online diamonds with similar specs made me nervous, so I asked the store for lower price options. I was shown two EGL (not sure which location) H SI2 stones around $12,000. I could definitely notice a big difference, even with the naked eye (for example the color was also H, but looked way darker, and the inclusions were clearly visible). Reading more about the various grading labs I definitely want to stay away from EGL stones. They had nothing to show in between these two price points right now (which seems fishy).

I've done a poor job setting a budget, but it's hard when there are so many variables to consider. Now that I have some context I'm thinking of trying to find a GIA diamond online around the $14,000-15,000 range, prioritizing cut over color and clarity. It seems there are plenty of ~2ct diamonds with excellent cut available in that range. Does this sound reasonable? Or is the jewelry store price above fair?

Neither my GF or I are "into" diamonds, and we will not be looking at it under a scope (after purchasing it anyway). But it's a once-in-a-lifetime purchase and I just want to get her a quality diamond. I don't mind spending a good chunk of money on it, I just really don't want to be taken for a ride.

Sorry for the lengthy post, I just decided to throw it out there and get some experts' opinion on it. Thanks very much in advance!

Have you already purchased the setting? What was your deposit like/can you get it back?

If you haven't purchased the setting, we might be able to find something similar, so that you can purchase the diamond and setting from the same location.

Thanks for your reply! I haven't purchased the setting yet, and I have a few more weeks to get the deposit refunded.

The setting is from Infinity Line, I believe it's this one, but I'm not 100% sure, since I don't have the model number:

They're fine with me getting a diamond online and taking care of getting it set. I just spoke with them again and told them I'd like to stick with GIA and gave them the new price range. They're going to keep looking for me, but didn't sound too optimistic about being able to beat online prices. Does my budget for the diamond ($14k-$15k) seem reasonable?

Bump. Anyone?

What are you looking for?

I spoke to the supplier today! They did mention that their inventory wasnt up to date. I actually slotted to remove all their inventory in tomorrows update, but I just marked the diamond as unavailable thanks to your help :)

I'll take a look. (DF, I think he wants 2 cts for $15k.) Personally, I would be concerned about SI2 in a 2 ct stone that is not in-house and I think Joshua and I agree on that. So I am not sure about getting to 2 cts with that budget, but I'll check on J SI1-VS2.

Thanks DS, those look great! I'll check to see if that 1.84 could work. What do you think of these:

2.03ct GIA J/VS2 HCA 1.8 http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.03-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-398092
2.05ct GIA J/SI1 HCA 1.3 http://www.idjewelry.com/round-el655-122.html

The James Allen stone has a really high crown angle, and when I was looking for someone else in the last couple of days on a site that had idealscope images, I did not see a single stone that had those measurements that did not have leakage. But you certainly could request an idealscope image for it to see.

IDJ webpage won't open at the moment.

To be honest, I do not think you can do better than the two Enchanted Diamonds stones already posted IF you want above 2 cts. The Whiteflash stone is superior in cut, but it is slightly under 2 cts. I really think these are your best bets. The JA stone is more than the 2.10 ED stone.

Thanks so much DS, great info. My only concern now is whether the J color will look bad compared to the side stones which will be higher color. Should I be worried about that? Seems like prices go up a lot for higher color grades.

The jeweler showed me another stone today, I again found it (for less) on ED:

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/view/R200-3NL8TN

It's a G color, but the HCA is much worse at 3.6. So I guess my main doubt is about cut versus color and what to prioritize, and whether it's worth spending a lot more to get both.

My engagement ring is a MRB 1.56 J with G-H side stones. Excellent cut. I got it 22 years ago. It is set in yellow gold. I cannot tell the difference between the center stone and the side stones. They look shiny and white together. Just this week I went looked at some paperwork to see what my center stone was and was surprised it was a J cause it is so white. (I know - bad me for not knowing.) But your gf needs to be happy with the color.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I went with the J stone from Enchanted and it looks great. It's being set now. :)
