Hello!

I have been lurking for a few weeks now. THANK YOU ALL for the tremendous wealth of informaion you have contributed to this site. I learned a lot!

I think I''m in the final stages of my search. But then again, I seem to be changing my mind on what''s important every few days as I learn more!

I went to see a diamond today and was provided with a Sarin report per my request. I understand the report except for what''s at the bottom of the page.

Proportion Grade 3 Very Good.

Can someone tell me what the grade of 3 means?
Do you know where I can find a list of all the grades?

Thanks!!!

I'd assume from the information you've provided that the stone in question is a round brilliant.

Proportion grade 3 means that the cut parameters fall within the ranges of the AGS cut grade 3. AGS0 is Ideal, AGS1 is excellent, AGS2 is very good. I believe AGS3 is "good"

AGS-3 Good Proportions
Table Width - % 50.4 - 51.3% -or- 61.6 - 63.5%
Crown Angle - Degrees 31.7° - 32.1° -or- 36.9° - 37.3°
Pavilion Depth - % 41.7 - 42.1% -or- 44.4 - 44.8%
Girdle Thickness Thick
Culet Size Large

AGS ranks grade from 0-10, 0 being the best.

AGS0 is Ideal cut, AGS1 is Excellent, AGS2 is Very Good, AGS3 is Good, AGS4 is Average, AGS2 is Below Average, and AGS6-10 are Poor.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my message/question.

Yes, it''s a round brilliant. The sales person stated that this was a AGS000 stone. I asked for the Sarin report which they provided. From my very limited knowledge the report looked OK (except for the proportion grade of 3).
The other values are all zero/very good - except for the girdle which is

min - very thin - 1
max - thick - 3
avg - Sl thick - 0 VG

I was not sure if proportion grade 3 was the same as ags3..........

So, am I correct in assuming the sales person stretched the truth, or can this be an AGS000 stone having issues getting into it''s girdle?

Thanks again!

What were the numbers on the sarin?? Angles, percentages, etc.....? Post the sarin results and people will comment on why it''s a 3, if that''s the case....

Sarin measurements tell only that much. It would be nice to have some image of the stone at hnad.

BTW.
Sarin gives several "interpretations" of the measurements on the usual interface. Among these there is a "Manufacturers view" and an "AGS view" and four or five others. To see what I am talking about, you may download a complete Sarin file and the free piece of software needed to read it (called "DiaVision"). Both things can be found on the GoodOldGold.com website

Hope this helps.

On the second thought... this is what the "AGS" screen format on DiaVision looks like.

I am not sure what the "3" is not "0" on your Sarin report.
It is clear that the "very good" words next to it reffer to Sarin's diagnostic of symmetry, not to the "Proportion grade" listed on the right (confusing layout).

The combination of proportions there does fit into the AGS0 "box" and Garry''s HCA system definitely gives the nod to this one

(chart below).

But... now I noticed that "very thin" girdle mention on the sarin report. That''s not quite "good news". However, Sarin is not very precise - it could be that the stone has no issue whatsoever and the measurements are just a hair off (after all, that girdle thickness is no more than 1-2% of the depth - very small and easily swamped by measurement error).

It would be worth inspecting this one for potentially chip-prone thin portions on the girdle. Chances are the numbers are not quite right and the stone is, but this is the only question rised by those cherry numbers
