I am looking for an emerald cut stone and I have been told by some that the Table %, Depth % and proportions cut do not matter. Is this true??? The stone that I found is:
0.91 ct
6.60 x 4.47 x 3.32
74.3% total depth
73.9% table
Slight blue UV
Medium to slightly thick girdle
E
VS1
Good polish and symmetry
Certificate is AGA class 3 B

My concerns are the slight blue UV and the certificate. I haven’t heard of the AGA cert and whether the class 3 B is an accurate representation for this stone. Please Help. Thanks

1) The blue shouldn't matter
2) If AGA is Accredited Gem Appraisers I wouldn't be worried. The owner, Dave Atlas, knows as much about appraising as anyone.
3) However, cut *does* matter and the only ones who say it doesn't are either ignorant or trying to sell you something!

A 3B is not that great of a cut, but with only the table and depth we can be completely sure. (Doesn't an AGA cert also have crown and pavillion data?) Plus, it's not as easy to judge fancy shapes by the numbers as it is to judge RBs so it's important to see it.

Thanks for the reply. The crown is 8.5% and the pavillion is 62.2%. I like the look of the stone, however I am concerned about the Class 3A/B rating.

This is quite deep. I have not seen any attempt to relate light return in EC with its geometry. One thing is sure here: you are not looking at a big stone for the weight and price, because of that depth. Symmetry shows more in EC than other cuts... The combination of big depth, large table and shallow crown does not inspire a lot of confidence to me!

I agree with Valeria. I would pass on this stone. You can do much better. Have you seen different EC's together and compared? I think if you found some with better proportions your eyes would really notice the difference.
