Ok, I''ve been looking around for a while now, I don''t need the ring anytime soon but I''m researching all this in advance and had some questions. I think I''m looking for a Solitare that''s .5ct or less. She sent me one "this is the one I want" link a while back and I''ve posted it below.

http://www.helzberg.com/product/engagement+%26+wedding/promise+rings/.07ct+round+diamond+ring+1656820.do?sortby=ourPicks

As you can see, she doesn''t want a big rock and the .5ct limit is per her request. After seeing that it was a promise ring and having the girl who sits behind me in class yell at me because "it doesn''t matter how poor you are, no med student should ever give any girl something like that" I was thinking maybe I could spring for somthing a little bigger.

Here''s a link to a setting and band we both really liked from Shane Co.

We''re looking for something that looks "swirled" if you know what that means (I''m not sure I even know what that means). Please send me anything that you think is similar to either one of these, I''m having a hard time finding them and the one above isn''t carried by Shane anymore.

Now for the rock: As I said before, she doesn''t want anything big so I was thinking something like one of the following:

https://www.pricescope.com/origin.asp?id=207795&sh=8&prc=2180

Another one from GOG with almost the same stats but in a .46ct size (it recently appeared in one of their videos so I bet someone bought it)

Before you jump all over me for even thinking of going the D IF H&A route, I''d like to point out my reasons. The idea of a diamond with more value than you can see with your eyes reminds me of the girl and I think it''d be perfect symbolism. We also both like the idea of a really amazing diamond that doesn''t attract any more attention than your average e-ring. With a setting and band similar to the Shane one above running about $315, my goal is to have about $2800 left over for the diamond. Assuming I can save that over the next year or so. Please let me know anything you think is pertinant, including what a bad deal the IF D H&A would be. I need to hear it all, its part of the learning process and I''ll admit I know next to nothing. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Welcome Luke!

I certainly understand your reasonings and if your GF has expressed her size preference, which it seems she has, the GOG diamond could be perfect! It also has a lovely cut and should be a real sparkler, good job in picking it! Have you found any other diamonds which are nearer the half carat mark, or would that not be an issue really, and .39 would be fine?

I am not well up on settings, but I am sure you will get lots of ideas!

Hi Luke

I totally understand about the quality aspect. I'm going the same route for my girlfriend's ring. I'm definitely into quality over quantity. As for the diamond you've found, it's really nice and if you think it's the right size for your girlfriend then I'd seriously consider buying.

I'm certain I've seen a recent post regarding a ring just like you describe, but I'll have to try and find it and get some images for you.

Edit: Here are some tension settings from James Allen. Not suggesting go the tension route, just for design ideas: Tension sets

Edit 2: Spiral ring

I''m still mesmerized by this one from the PS gallery, and would have considered it, if I hadn''t wanted the option of wearing my band and e-ring on the same finger:

Wow...that is some rubbish. As one pre-med student to another, you are going to be getting sattled with a ton of expenses over the next few years so going way out of your budget now doesn''t make much sense. You can always upgrade later when you are more comfortable, so don''t go crazy now.

That being said, if you want and can afford bigger than go for it, but don''t do it our of peer pressure.

Welcome to PS and good luck!

Thanks for the posts, I think anything over .33 would be fine, I''d probably like to get in the .4''s if I can. I definately won''t go for a bigger one because of peer pressure, her response was just so funny to me that I had to throw it in. I was able to put away all my paycheck for last summer and I think I can get a job this summer and pay for the other half so I think I can fit it in the budget. I''m trying to spend the money now since she says she doesn''t like the idea of upgrading (my dad says that will change with time though, haha).

A D IF is like buying a Toyota Camry and then dropping a Ferrari engine to it. And you live in Los Angeles (where gridlock is a fact of life.) My car is a Camry, so I''m not trying to dis the Toyota lovers.

No one knows that you''ve got on the inside, and you will never get to utilize/enjoy the engine, except for knowing you have it...

If you have over 500 for the setting, go custom. Otherwise, Stuller makes lots of "swirly" ones that will fit your needs.

This statement seems a bit ironic on a board dealing with diamonds.

. . . I mean, these forums are filled with people that pay more for gems whose values can only be judge my a microscope. In many cases, differences aren''t even noticable by the hunam eye whether it''s an IF or a VS1 or whether the color is D, E, or F, yet people will still opt to pay more for a better rock.

People have different reasons for spending money on things. This guy seems to have a good symbolic reason for wanting a D IF stone, so if he has the money to do so, I say, more power to him.

I can buy into wanting D color because that can be seen and it is the best color grade, but I just don''t get the IF part. You probably can''t see the inclusions with a 10x loupe in VS1 and certainly not in VVS. It''s not like you are really sacrificing quality by looking at VVS. That is considered VERY high quality! I''d spend a little more on the setting so that the setting doesn''t look cheap in comparison to the stone.

I think this is why DS, going from the original post, it is a symbolism thing with Luke.

Even though D and VVS would still be extremely high quality, I guess Luke wants the best he can get for his girl. I imagine this is what makes a diamond " mindclean" to them.
