Hi All,
Thanks for reading my Post. I am a boy, looking to purchase an engagement ring for his girlfriend, and I have no idea about Diamonds. My budget is about $10,000 for the stone. I am from Australia, so I am looking to purchase online.

I am currently looking at this particular stone on bluenile. (F, IF, excellent cut, polish, symmetry, and nil fluorescence)
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?pt=setform&track=NavDiaSeaRD#diamonds_pid=LD03462391

Is this stone a good deal, or should I consider something else, or go somewhere else.

Is there a way that I can avoid the 10% GST when it gets to Australia.

Your expertise and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there... I am no expert as well... but if you are willing to spend that kind of money... why don't you get a bigger diamond at the VVS clarity range? The inclusions are impossible to see on a VVS1 or VVS2 even with a magnification... but the bigger carat size is most certainly visible to everyone.

Hi

You are at the right place for the guidance, I see the requirement that you have placed, Bluenile is a popular place
to buy diamonds online however its not the only company, there are several other less known companies online which provide
better deals on the stones i.e JA, B2C, GOG, WF do you have reservations to buy only from BN?

I see the diamond you have selected is Color F and Clarity IF, I think IF stone would look just the same as VS1 with the
naked eyes, Ideally speaking it is wise to go with bigger Carat stone and lesser quality, something like G/VS1 would look as
good as F/IF, do you have any set preference in Color/Clarity, you must not compromise on the Cut and cut is the factor
determines the light refraction and beauty, this is what in my opinion you should look for:

Color : G
Clarity : VS1
Cut : Excellent
Table : 54-58
Depth : 60-62.30
Fluorescence : None/Faint

I see three stones below which may interest you:

I think there is a way to avoid the Custom duty when you buy engagement ring with FTA in place but not sure if there is any way you can get away with the 10% GST.

Hope above options helps you, Good Luck :appl:

You have to pay 10% GST on imported items worth over AUD$1000. See below:

Imported goods with a value above A$1000

If your imported goods arrive in Australia by air cargo, sea cargo or by post and their value is above A$1000, in most cases, you will be required to make an Import Declaration and pay the calculated duty and taxes.

An Import Declaration is a statement made to Customs and Border Protection providing information about imported goods.

Hi,

Blue Nile have an Australian website and the price of the taxes and duties which is around just over 10% are factored in already, if you purchase from Blue Nile US then you have to pay the import duties. I am an Aussie too, with our dollar having just fallen a heap by the time you wire the money and do the actual bank exchange rate (which is lower again) and pay the taxes and duties you are looking at a 20% hit (ouch). Having said that diamonds are generally cheaper in the US than they are here and you can get better quality diamonds cheaper in the US I believe.

These guys are in Perth if you wish to not pay the tax (its included already);

What I tend to do is say to Aussie Blue Nile or the large organisations here I can buy a GIA triple ex cut stone from x for this amount what can you do - you will suddenly find they will be quite competitive. You can also email Jogia and tell them you want a triple ex stone and give them the specs of what you are looking for and they will find something for you. Buy the time you pay the taxes and duties and work out the exchange rate there probably won't be much difference.

Buying an IF stone or a VVS1 is overkill, put the money towards a diamond that is eye clean (always always ask them this) ie a VS1 or a VS2 and get a bigger stone for the money it will be well worth it. No one and I mean no one will notice its a flawless stone versus and eye clean stone everyone however WILL notice the size!!!!

I do think that F, IF is definitely overkill. I did a quick search on JA and found these two stones. Both are G, VS2, Excellent cut and are priced between $8800-8830, giving you some "wiggle room" for any import fees/taxes.

Hope this helps! :))
