Hi,
I'm new to the board, so please be forgiving if I'm in the wrong thread, etc.

I hope you can give me some feedback on a potential purchase. I'm looking at a diamond on ebay. I like that it's GIA certified (2002), but I don't know enough about depth, table, girdle, etc to know if there's something I should be worried about. It's a diamond dealer (as opposed to an individual seller getting rid of a ring).
Princess cut
.55 carat, VS2, F
Polish and symmetry= good
Depth 71.6%
Table 78%
4.66x4.50x3.22mm
Girdle ETN to VTK
Culet none
$1,550

I obviously don't have a lot to spend, but I don't need anything "huge". I just want to know if I'm crazy for considering it. I have the auction number but don' t know if it's appropriate to post it here. Any feedback? I looked at one other one on ebay (hence, looking at 2) but their certification was from NGL, which I learned from PS might not be a good way to go, so I've eliminated that one from consideration.
Thank you!!!

Hi,
Im noo expert in princess cut stones, but here are a few things that i have learned from the good folks on this forum..in princess stones, try and look for a smaller table than depth..and try to avoid very thin girdles..as they tend to chip slightly more easily than RB..and extreme girdles of very thin to thick..may not be so good. however, its up to you and if its what your looking for, good luck! any experts care to advise..

Bb,

Let's take a look at value. Here are a few examples for you to compare to the stone that you are considering for purchase. As you can see, you can get much better quality for the money that you are looking to spend. Just take a look at similar stones that are listed below. Also, go to www.gemappraisers.com. They can offer you great insight into what to look for when buying a princess cut diamond. Hopefully this helps.

Watch that Extremely Thin girdle! They can break and chip VERY easily! Look for a princess cut diamond that has some Crown Height to it, the crown is the top portion of the diamond that is located above the girdle edge. Something like 7 - 11% would be great! Run a search here on Price Scope to see if you can find anything in your price range that might have a better cut to it.

Thanks...so I'm starting to get the headache everyone else seems to get when looking at diamonds.

So what do you do when you buy one loose? Do I need to find a reputable jeweler to set it for me? That's just as scary to me as finding the diamond to begin with! Some of the sites have settings but not necessarily in the style I want...Advice?

Well, You could ship the setting to the vendor you bought your stone from and have him/her set it for you. That would be the easiest and most likely solution without involving too much leg work on your part of buying the stone separate, finding a setting, and then finding a jeweler to put everything together for you. Usually vendors who sell stones will set it for you whether you get the setting from them or not...They might charge or they might not.....You have many options though....
