Hello my boyfriend and I went to look at loose stones today and need help making a decision. Can you give me any advice on these four stones? All are round brillant...

I don't know too much about rounds but I think you will need more information to get any meaningful answers. Which lab(s) graded these diamonds? Do you have the crown and pavillion information? I don't think SI3 is a GIA or AGS grading so be careful that you get what you pay for. Are they all eye clean?

I think that you typed the incorrect color grade for diamond #1.

Of course, since it sounds as though you have seen them, I think you know more than any of us. When I can see a diamond in person, I let my eyes be the judge and worry much less about the numbers than I obviously would if I bought online (which I would highly recommend, BTW). Do you mind listing the prices?

Jazmine is right about the crown and pavillion angles being needed. Are these all EGL graded? The depth on the first is too deep, are you sure the diameter measurements are right? If so it is seriously out of round too. Also check the S colour grade on the first, it would be very tinted if correct. How do these look to you? Tolkowsky is a name EGL use to describe their ideal cuts but opinions can vary. What are the table sizes on the last two?

You''re right the 1st diamond is a H/SI2. They are all EGL. After seeing loose stones for 2 hours they all started looking alike. Kind of like smelling perfume. We narrowed it down to four and told them we would get back with them. They price for #1 is 9300, #2 11,500 #3 8,600 and #4 7,300.
They didn''t write down the crown and pavillion info...

I would want more info on the cut quality - on the EGL certs there will be the angles in percentages, not as accurate as angles but something. Just ask the vendor for a copy of the certs. The colours are diverse from an E to a J, this isn''t a priority? If you don''t want to delve too far into analysing cut quality, which is so important as it is what makes a diamond beautiful that''s fine, but use your eyes and see which diamond you like best. Also does the vendor have a good return policy? I would strongly advise getting an independant appraisal during the return period to make sure the diamond you choose checks out regarding the colour and clarity grading.

Hi, have you had a chance to read on here about diamond quality? It will help you a lot! I honestly am not sure I''d consider any of the stones you mention, especially not an SI3 because it likely has inclusions visible to the naked eye. Same with SI2 in some cases (you''d need to look at them carefully up close and with a 10x loupe). So for me personally, that would rule out #1, 2 and 4 automatically. An E color is paying a high premium when an F-G-H would likely be fine. You''re getting into a slight tint with I and J, but those can be great values and face up white in an excellent cut stone. You do need to narrow down your parameters and understand more about cut. Just as an example, my parameters for color were G- H and VS clarity (but SI1 can be a great value if the inclusions are placed in an unnoticable position), and ideal/excellent cut. Once you do that, then you can look at your budget and see what size stone you can buy within your parameters.

i would pass on #1 and #4.

#1....EGL europe report plus it is out of round and too deep.

#4....EGL europe report,SI 3.

One more thing I have thought of, an S13 is an EGL only grade which isn't recognised by the other labs, usually to describe a " better" I1 clarity. Now some SI3's may be eyeclean as indeed are some I1 's if you get lucky, just didn't know if you were aware of this. When all is said and done it is more likely to be an I1 diamond. I think you need to decide if cut quality is very important to you and you want to go much further into learning the basics and comparing and take a little more time, or if a pretty and LARGE diamond which isn't necessarily the best cut is what you would like. Nothing wrong with wanting size as I am rather partial myself

, but not everyone wants to delve too far into the ins and outs of cut quality and would rather buy with their eyes, it just isn't the way we tend to advise around here! I would definitely not consider #1 due to the depth and the diameter measurements. I hope this helps a bit.
