Wow, that is amazing. What kind of clay (and brand) is he using? I''ve purchased modeling clay for my kids but found it difficult to work with, not like I''d be able to create anything as impressive as what your husband has. . .

This is silly but for some reason when I saw the title to your thread, I was imagining a sculpture of a diamond! lol

Wow.. That is incredible- I am blown away

That is beautiful, Dianne! Your husband is definitely very talented.

You mentioned that he would feel like his hobby would lose some of its enjoyment and stress-relief for him if he started a business, etc. Someone just recommended a book to me today that I would like to share with you (and your husband): The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. It''s about finding one''s dream in life and why we are many times deterred from that dream by our fears of actually realizing it. If you only read the preface, you''ll get the message. Also, a quote:

''Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won''t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.'' ~ Marianne Williamson

Just thought that was oh so appropriate...forgive me for being all spiritual and tedious!
No need to apologize...that''s very powerful. Thank you. I need to look for that book, too!
My local public library doesn''t have it, but I looked it up on Barnes & Nobles'' website and there are several versions available. One of which is a downloadable version for a very reasonable price. Just an FYI. I don''t mean to turn your thread into something self-serving at all.

My mother is an amazing quilter, has been president of her local quilt guild, entered and won many competitions, and hosted lessons not only at her home but in public venues. She has used the same ''it won''t be as pleasurable anymore'' excuse as far as why she doesn''t REALLY go forth and prosper with her talent. Friends, family, strangers agree that she has an extraordinary talent and should have her own gallery. She is 66...I don''t know what is holding her back, but I think sometimes the answer is that she''s afraid there won''t be anything left for her to achieve once she reaches her greatest goal in life. Yanno? Scary, disconcerting thoughts for a very naturally talented person to deal with.
I appreciate you sharing information you feel would be helpful.

Regarding your Mom...Wow!...I can''t sew at all so quilting is so impressive to me. Your thoughts about her fear are interesting and provide a point of view I have never considered. I hope she''ll decide to go for it!!!

MC, He uses Sculpey, found in most craft stores. After sculpting you bake it in the oven which serves as a kiln to harden the final design.

A diamond sculpture....hmmmmm...I think you may have just planned his next project!!

Wonder if I can talk him into it...maybe if I have him work it into one of the Star Wars characters. Wouldn''t Chewbacca look just lovely with matching pendant and earrings....LOL

Dianne, you have a very talented hubby!! Gorgeous work!! Will that be a gift, for your home, or up for sale? It''s really beautiful!!

very cool.

wow, dianne, your DH has quite the talent, i''m very impressed

WOW!! Absolutely amazing! I had to call my DH to look at this and he was equally impressed! (And he doesn''t get impressed very often).

Amazing! He''s very talented.

Thank you, Luckyeshe: He made it per a request from my co-worker. Her granddaughter loves giraffes and she wanted to give her a one-of-a-kind gift to add to her collection for Christmas. She asked for a giraffe...she got an entire scene. I just showed her the pics today and she was thrilled.

That is very impressive. Wow. He painted it by hand too! What a lucky girl you are to have so much talent under your roof.

Monarch: I have to tell you this. When I was responding to your post last night DH asked what I was doing. He didn''t know I had put his pics on PS. So I told him I was responding to you on "his" thread because you were kind enough to suggest a book you felt would be helpful.

He got the strangest look on his face and said, "What kind of book?"
Me: "Something to inspire you. Hold on and you can read her comments."
Him: "But what kind of book?"
Me: "A book she feels would be helpful...just hold on, I''m almost finished, and you can read her comments."
Him: "But what kind of comments?"
Me (getting annoyed): "Can you hold on a sec and let me respond?...oh, never mind...ok, she is suggesting a book that may inspire you to follow your talent, and be all you can be, and not hold back because you feel you will no longer enjoy your hobby."
Him (looking relieved): "Ohhhh....I thought she felt the giraffes looked like someone in kindergarten did them and she wanted me to buy a how-to book"

I think he was getting worried about letting my co-worker see them at that point.

Hahahahaha! Oh, that is toooo funny. I can so imagine the mental eye-rolling you were doing when he got all insistent! LOL His comment is priceless about kindergarten giraffes, also.

Wow, that''s amazing! He''s very talented! Has he ever thought out about doing it as serious hobby/part-time craft business? He can make a lot of money, I''m sure.

Thank you, Sha. He has had many people tell him he should do that. It''s really hard to get enough money for your time. It takes a really long time, but he just works on it whenever he likes, and usually just works on things for himself. You would not believe all he has in storage. Our house simply is not big enough to hold it all...it would be wall-to-wall...plus he really likes Star Wars and I''m not thrilled with the idea of eating dinner with Yoda and R2D2 sitting on the table. I hope we can someday move to a bigger home that has a full basement he can use as his hobby and display room.

Just wanted everyone to know hubby says a big THANK YOU to everyone that posted all the flattering comments. It''s always nice to hear that your hobby, and how well you do it, is appreciated.

Now, if I can just manage to talk him into a part-time side business...

...and maybe all of your suggestions about that will help! Thanks again!!

Get out, your DH made that?!? Wow...that is really good!

that is AMAZING..I love giraffes and his work is just FABULOUS. He''s so talented...very talented. I can barely draw a circle...so when I see ppl who have real talent..I applaud them. It''s a gift

I have to admit... I avoided even checking this thread because I was expecting to see something stupid. Boy was I wrong! That looks absolutely fantastic. Your co-worker''s granddaughter is going to be over the moon when she sees that!

I'm so glad you weren't disappointed when you decided to take a peek!
How funny your avatar is a frog....He made one of those colorful frogs on a leaf for another co-worker of mine. You would have loved it since you must love frogs! Hmmm...wonder if I have a pic of that one....

Wow, that is so amazing! Please continue to pass our encouragements along to your husband. He has a lot of talent, and I agree that it could make a good side business. All it would take is some limitations, such as allowing himself ample time to complete one, or maybe only take on 1 project at a time, have a wait list if enough people are interested, etc. Just don''t allow the pressure to begin at all. Make it so that he can still enjoy whatever he is doing at the time, except that it happens to be something he''ll get paid for. It can still be his stress relief outlet. I do think that would be easier if it was something he still just did on the side, and not as an entire business idea.

Just some thoughts. I love this sculpture though!! They are very life-like, and the scenery looks great as well!
