Local Jeweler or Online?

I'm in the market for an engagement ring and have been looking/reading threads to better inform myself before making a purchase.

My question is: What's are the differences between buying from a local jeweler and purchasing online?

After reading various threads on PS I've noticed a lot of mentions for online venders such as GOG, WF and JA. Aren't these places technically local jewelers too - or are they more of a "wholesaler" ?

Any help/insight is much appreciated. Thanks!

Where are you located? Let's see if there is a PS jeweler near you.

GOG is a brick and mortar and sells to the public.

JA in online only but will meet upon an appointment with people.

WF and BGD are not open to the public. They do not have store fronts. But they do meet with customers on an appointment only basis.

So is it safe to assume that local jewelers and PS'ers are ordering loose diamonds from the same source? i.e. GOG, JA, WF?
