I need your help! We want to replace our light fixtures (they are SO outdated and NOT our style). We like more modern designs, stainless steel/brushed nickel, and DH insists on *glass* shades. We have three main ones, one in our foyer that needs to be pretty large (it is one of those 2 story foyers so a big light fixture is a must, one for our dining room that currently houses a pool table (I like the idea of a horizontal light but NOT a traditional pool light) and one for over our kitchen table. Here is a few that I like the design of. They don''t have to be perfectly matching but would like it to have similar elements (same shape shades for example). Anyone want a challenge?

I can''t remember what site I found this but thought something like this would be perfect for over the pool table.

I kind of like something like this for the foyer but am afraid I would get sick of it.

This would work for the kitchen. I think the size is right.

Maybe this foyer light would be better...less modern, more traditional...

I think this light would be way to big for our kitchen but I really like its clean lines.

Have you looked at ylighting.com?

They seem awfully expensive to me, though.
Circe S19 Pendant Light, $460 each?

I like the idea of going a little more traditional, but still with clean lines, for the foyer.

thanks Erika. We don''t plan on moving anytime soon but I am worried I''ll pick something I''ll get sick of. The foyer lights are the biggest problem since we need something so large and don''t want to spend over $1,000 for it. What we have now is SO ugly I guess anything will be an improvement!

I know what you mean about anything being an improvement. I hate our lighting, too, but haven''t had the time to go to Ikea to see if there''s anything passable. I''m sure you could find something at Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware on sale. Good luck!

erika, I have looked at PB and CB the problem seems to be the brushed nickel finish and the glass shades. Beware of Ikea. I STILL remember Deco''s thread where her Ikea light caught on fire

I really like this one!

Are the little "x"s under the glass too distracting?

Do you live near an Ikea showroom? They have SO many lights to choose from that are all pretty much along those lines!

I love that first one you posted! That would be awesome over a table or game table!

Lucky they are opening an Ikea in the spring here. I am slightly nervous of their lights after Deco's caught on fire

ETA: I think that style (over the pool table) would look great over a regular dining table too. Just in case we ever grow up

I don''t think so.

Boy! I almost missed this one!

OK - it's late and I'll have to revisit this tomorrow...

But I don't like 4 or 6. Too traditional ... and kinda remind me of builder's fixtures...

Trust me- check out Unionlightingandfurnishings.com....great stuff!!! (not unionlighting.com)

More, I am so glad you saw this! I love your style. Anyways...not too late. Probably won''t buy for a month or so. I agree and don''t want "builder" generic lights. I also don''t want to spend an arm and a leg for something cool...off to check out that site. I have a few new ones I found today that I love. Need to see them in person for the sense of size. Would it help if I posted a pic of my foyer?

I really like this for the foyer...might be too small though.

:) too kind

OK- here is my first question....which light do you see first (if any) when you first enter the house? I had a problem where you walk right in and you see the dining light, the foyer light and the over the kitchen table light...I actually ended up going with pretty different finishes and even a very different style in the foyer but it works for some reason....

So I say to first pick the light that you first see when you enter the house....and take it from there....

Do they all have to be glass shades?

I'd also make sure that the kitchen lights don't beam down and hit you in the face with light- so that there is some kind of diffuser...

This is very expensive...but I like it so figured I''d post it...this would be a super cool foyer light....I''m sure that there are ones that look like it for cheaper....

I really like lightinguniverse.com....you can shop by style and size and finish so it makes it very easy to look around

Our house has one of those huge arched windows above the front door (which you can see the foyer light from the outside). It is a two story foyer. You can see the dining room light to the left and to my right is glass french doors to my office (and I have the same home depot fan as you). Not sure if you can see it as soon as you enter the house like you can with the dining room. Our dining room has a pool table that''s why I thought a horizontal light would look really cool.

DH has this weird thing against shades so it is his request they are all glass instead of fabric (which he thinks makes it more modern). You cannot see the kitchen light from the entry.

How much is your version of expensive?
2.gif
Does it come in a brushed/matte finish?

My version of expensive is any light that big over $500....:) that one is over 3 grand tee hee...I just thought it was a really nice shape and very unexpected bc it''s really a traditional look but really sleek with the materials...

I agree as long as the "feel" and "shape" is the same they will look great. I do like the one you posted and you can''t beat that price!

Oh yeah, too much! I think I could get DH to spend up to $800, MAYBE $1,000 if it is awesome for the foyer. For all three our ideal budget is $1,500.
