People don't like to think that luck plays a huge part in our lives. It makes them feel powerless. And there's nothing fair about luck.

Is my life perfect? Absolutely not. But compared to some parts of the world, most Americans are very blessed. We cannot control how other people treat us, but we can choose to be thankful for what we do have. A positive outlook is far healthier than one that focuses on the negative. So I can’t answer about fairness. There’s good and evil in this world. Almost anyone with the time and privilege of being on a diamond forum are probably among the most fortunate. I do not take that for granted.

I do not believe there is a real thing called luck.
Luck is just another nice useful idea that people made up to fill a void, or answer unanswerable questions.
In that sense luck is like karma, god, fate, it is "written" or meant to be, etc.

We can't control everything.
Some stuff just is.
Stuff just happens ... good stuff & bad stuff.

Our human arrogant pea-brains can't tolerate not knowing stuff, even stuff that is simply unknowable.
So we make up answers to our kids' questions, and work to get others to go alone with these nice ideas.

We make sense out of, essentially, nothing.

Hi,

I think luck is a confluence of circumstances, which do make it real. Fir example: a man gets promoted because his superior left for another job. Then the person above him dies and that spot is filled by him. The Pres is caught harassing a women or man and he is fired. The VP becomes Pres. and our guy is now VP. His rise in the company is due to luck, being in the right place at the right time..

He needs gas, goes to a gas station, and buys a lotto ticket. He wins money. This too is luck.

My 2 cents.

Annette

I see these as just cause and effect.
The lottery obeys simple mathematical odds.

Humans need meaning and explanations even when there is none.

Disagree. The word luck is just a word to mean more or less fortunate. There is no reason implied by saying someone is lucky or unlucky. It simply means the person has had good or bad things just happen to him/her. To say someone is born lucky means that the universe has favored and continues to favor that individual. It just is what it is, there is no implication of an agent at work, but we need a word to describe the universe's state of favor. Just look at Teflon Don. If ever a person was favored by the universe it was him.

I never made up any stories for my children. If I didn't know, I said so and we would try to find an answer if there was one.
