I’m getting this ring for my bday. I’ve never seen it in person or held it yet. Currently there’s a 1.5ct zircon in there. I’ll measure it when I get it, but assuming it is 1.5ct, I’m looking for a transitional cut like this (rbc bottom, oec on top):

I guess someone will ask what color and clarity… So far we’ve been really happy JKL SI range. But it might be fun to get an FHG… but it might also be fun to get something yellow. So I don’t know! I’m a fire slut. So if it’s lively with a lot of dispersion I can’t really say no

First thing you’d need to do is measure the diameter and depth of the existing zircon, as it’s set into a form fitted setting. It might take a good jeweler to set another stone into the setting depending on how close in size the diameter is to the existing stone.

Also a 1.5 carat zircon might not translate in size to a 1.5 carat diamond, depending on dimensions. OEC with higher crown might be more weight, even if diameter is same.

The other thing to consider is crown height and table size. I suggest a diamond with a higher crown (like the existing stone or higher) for this setting, so the diamond is more visible than one with a low crown (lower crown usually translates to a larger table). My transitional is extremely firey but it has a lower crown and larger table than a typical OEC.

These are all great points. Gonna gave to wait until I get the ring and measure the zircon

My wife measured it, because the suspense is killing me and she said it’s about 7.5mm. So should be right about 1.5ct. That’s what the jeweler said who sold it to us said too. So I think I’m safe to shop for a 1.5ct. But now where to look?

Old cuts are not precision cut so the diameter can vary widely with carat weight. You are better off to take the mount to a trusted vendor and ask them what range diameter stones will fit and then look for a stone with the correct diameter. Likely the mount can hold something in the 7.4 to 7.6 range but you’d need an expert opinion. Ideally the person who will set the stone.
