i have seen beautiful performing unmounted steep/deep cut stones maybe b/c i''am seeing sparkles coming through the pavil ? does that make sence?

It is possible yes.
Also being clean can make a difference.

What are the numbers?

here is a 35.5 41.2 with a black background

same combo with the same front lighting but with very strong back lighting

That is the angle combination that I have and it performs well almost all of the time. I freaked out for a while when I realized I saw the ring of death in it, although it has never looked nearly as pronounced as it does in those photos. The only time I can see it however, is in a vehicle where there is obviously no light coming in from overhead. And once at an indoor baseball field with weird lighting. The rest of the time it looks absolutely beautiful, and I get compliments on it all the time, specifically people tell me it caught their eyes from across the room. I have it set up pretty high with lots of light on the pavilion and I clean it obsessively so that helps.

And I would LOVE to hear about other steep/deeps that perform well. I wanted to recut mine when I realized it was steep and deep but have since changed my mind, because I love it too much to risk changing it. You always hear that different people have different preferences and I''ve come to love it this way. The leakage it has makes for some really cool contrast/patterning that I''m afraid wouldn'' look the same anymore if I recut it. But since steep/deeps are so often referred to as dogs and people are advised to pass on them, it would be great to hear a few more people say they saw nice ones, mounted or not

sometimes "dogs" can be loved just as fervently as super-ideals.

True

But no one likes to hear their diamond called a dog. If mine is a dog, it''s a beautiful irish setter showdog running freely in the field

Except in the car, then she''s a pug. Not as pretty but you love her anyway! Does anyone else experience this? It''s really just in the car. Is that weird or is it normal for a cut like mine??? Sorry if I am thread jacking, but it is topic related so maybe someone knows.

that steep/deep combo might look good in an open pavil setting.

That is one difference a better cut makes, the setting don''t matter much and across a wider range of lighting they tend to look better.

Under some lighting doing a comparison if one isn''t to extremely bad most could not tell them apart, in some lighting some people can tell them apart and depending on how badly cut most people could tell them apart in others.
Hanging around here and learning what to look for puts someone with good eyesight in the some that can tell them apart category a lot of the time.
