“Turn off the lamp.”

Carina ignored him, her eyes staring straight ahead. The small lantern she held was already flickering down but she would be damned before she obeyed Samuel.

“Carrie. Come on, it’s nearly gone anyway,” he admonished gently, hesitant to fall guilty of overbearing, which was her only complaint of him.

She moved slightly away from him, grudgingly twirling the fob to lower the wick. As the light slipped past them into nothingness, the breeze picked up along the rocky coast, and her long skirts reminded her of the oncoming chill.

“I said no, Sam. It’s impossible. It will never work, and you know it.” She pulled her wrap closer and turned to face him.

Their eyes met, and Samuel felt his blood rise again. “Oh, yes it will. You’ll see. It will be an entirely new thing. No one has ever done it before.”

“Philadelphia isn’t ready,” she said, “and you’ll look like a fool.” Her head turned sharply aside and her voice lowered. “And then what will happen to us…”

Samuel bent forward, crossing her gaze. “I’ll tell you what. We will be stars.”

Carina laughed a wry, mirthless laugh. "Stars?" she said. "What do you know about that?"

Samuel placed his hands gently on her waist, and pulled her closer to him. She stared at him with a look that was at once defiant, but also wistful.

She felt his breath on her cheek. She closed her eyes breaking away from his gaze. Most of life's defining moments happen unexpectedly. Is this one for them?

"What about Vanessa?" she asked. "How can we..." Samuel interrupted her. "Carrie, please, don't worry about Vanessa". He wrapped his arms around her. The chill in the air suddenly vanished and she felt warm. "I will take care of everything. This is meant to be, trust me. I know it in my heart."

Carrie looked into his deep blue eyes and this time held his gaze. "At what price Sam? At what price?"

"Well," he said, his tone at once both calculating and intense, "I'm thinking roughly $89.95 - for a one year membership. Sam's Price Club. Vanessa has always been an utterly shit accountant, so I'm not putting too much store by her figures. And you're right - I might look like a fool. But if I can sign significant members, supply groceries at a decent discount, arrange a delivery deal with Amazon, and roll out an options model - hell! - I could be the wealthiest fool in this godforsaken town within 18 months! And by the way, what's with the long skirts all the time? Do you have knobbly knees or something?"

"There's nothing wrong with my knees," his companion answered drily. "I'm a nun. This is what we wear. And by the way - my name's Susan."

Laurie McBain has nothing on you guys!

I can’t wait. I love a good historical bodice ripper.

"Well, Susie Q, pray tell, can I call you partner?"

Susan Carina looked at Samuel with utter contempt. One of the reasons she became a nun was to cast off the trappings of modern living, and there was no better epitomization than Sam's Price Club. The thought of the mindless shoppers, milling about about aisles of economy-sized Cheez-Its and fighting over samples of dinosaur nuggets made the bile swell in her throat.

"And how will you make it worth my while?"

Samuel pulled her closer, and put his lips next to her ears as his hands moved down past her waist. "You're a bride of Christ. Maybe I can help you...consummate things?"

She felt his hot breath gently fall on her ears, her neck, and she went weak in the knees.
His strong arms supported her as she leaned into him.
"Samuel, Samuel, Samuel" she moaned.
Samuel drew her closer. "Carrie, my love, let me make things right. I promise, you won't regret it".

He swooped her up and carried her into the bedroom. Carrie leaned into his body trying to memorize everything about this moment. His strong physique. Lean and muscular without being overdone. His dark thick wavy hair. His smile. That smile would captivate you making you forget everything and just be in the moment with him. Women swooned when they saw Samuel. Devastatingly handsome. But it wasn't his looks that made him irresistible. No, his sharp wit, his dry sense of humor and his generous, sensitive and kind eyes. And his confidence and charisma. Those were the real draw. He was, in a word, incredible. All but for one thing...her mind drifted back to the moment. His aftershave so subtle but present reminding her of the terrible memory they shared.

He gently placed her on the bed and she felt salty warm tears running down her cheek. No she thought, no, she couldn't repeat the same mistakes again. It would hurt too many innocent people. Hadn't they already been through enough? She looked into his dark blue eyes. So dark they seemed brown until you were next to him. Oh she loved almost everything about him. Almost everything but one major flaw.
They say you cannot bury the past. Oh, but for the past five years the secret was safely hidden. Now the truth would have to come out.

"Samuel, no, we have to face facts" she sobbed. "Our secret could demolish everything."

Carrie quickly pushed Samuel off of her , looking deeply into his eyes she whispered since we’re going to be rich with this Costco Amazon endeavor we leaving right now he looked at her with a puzzled face what are you saying Carrie ? She replied more forcefully this time! get your ass in the car we have bling to buy and especially a large Old European I’ve had my eye on ! I’ll be in the car while you clean that mess off the front of your trousers with a quick flick of her hair she was out the door. Samuel was afraid to look down but look down he did and saw a straight brown line across the top of his thighs from leaning against the old metal bed’s footboard, he quickly cleaned himself up and ran out to the car opening the drivers door he slid into the seat out of breath and looking at Carrie saying I never knew you wanted a threesome ? Carrie stared at him for a few minutes and calmly said why do you say that Samuel and he answered well apparently we are off to find some old white dude , looking straight ahead without emotion of any kind she said Merry Christmas to me Poney Boy now put some petal to the metal it’s getting late!

Just as he was putting petal to the metal, a strong wild swept away dense fog that had cloaked everything in misty white revealing a fulvous moon hanging low in the sky. A strange keening sound emanated from Carrie and when she turned toward him, her eyes were goldly glowing. Her lips parted in a malevolent smile, revealing sharp pointed teeth.

Glancing over at Carrie Samuel sarcastically said by the way love the new look and I’m sure your old white dude will to , wagging a finger at her he said do not under any circumstance mention what we promised each other we would never talk about because if you do I’m pulling this raggedy clown car over and your on your own ,you’ll just have to find dinner by yourself . Carrie knew he was serious so she crossed her arms on her chest quietly bidding her time knowing her chance would soon come .
