*sigh*

I i'm sorry that we won't be hearing any more from this brilliant poet. Selfishly, I'm sorry that I never had the chance to see him in concert. But he had recently talked about expecting to die soon, being ready to die, and I think wanting to die. So I can't be sad.

Godspeed, Mr. Cohen.

Deb, have you seen the letter that Leonard Cohen wrote to his friend Marianne - she of "So long, Marianne" fame? It's achingly beautiful. If no, do try to find it. I think it made the rounds just a few months ago.

;( he was simply the best. I especially love his later, darker songs and his poems were great. Now I can never see him perform live. :((

When I heard the news this morning I felt so sad. I am a big Leonard Cohen fan. He was a genius. A poet, songwriter,, musician, author and just a master artist. I listen to his music every single day as I always include one or 2 or more of his songs in each of my music playlists that I listen to while working out or just working around the house or even at work. I have so many favorite songs from him that I cannot pick just one.

He was 82 but somehow that doesn't seem too old to me. I just read an interview of him when he was discussing his last released album Darkness. It has some songs that resonate with me. So sad.

From his most recent album released just 3 weeks ago.

You Want It Darker
Leonard Cohen

If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game
If you are the healer, it means I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame

Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified, in the human frame
A million candles burning for the help that never came
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my lord

There's a lover in the story
But the story's still the same
There's a lullaby for suffering
And a paradox to blame
But it's written in the scriptures
And it's not some idle claim
You want it darker
We kill the flame

They're lining up the prisoners
And the guards are taking aim
I struggled with some demons
They were middle class and tame
I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my lord

Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified, in the human frame
A million candles burning for the love that never came
You want it darker
We kill the flame

If you are the dealer, let me out of the game
If you are the healer, I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory, mine must be the shame
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my lord
Hineni
Hineni, hineni
Hineni

Rest in Peace Leonard Cohen. You will live on in history and you will be remembered. Thank you for enriching our lives with your poetry and music.

VRBeauty, this is for you. I love this song. It is achingly beautiful.

Come over to the window, my little darling,
I'd like to try to read your palm.
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
before I let you take me home.
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.
Well you know that I love to live with you,
but you make me forget so very much.
I forget to pray for the angels
and then the angels forget to pray for us.
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began ...
We met when we were almost young
deep in the green lilac park.
You held on to me like I was a crucifix,
as we went kneeling through the dark.
Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began ...
Your letters they all say that you're beside me now.
Then why do I feel alone?
I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
is fastening my ankle to a stone.
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began ...
For now I need your hidden love.
I'm cold as a new razor blade.
You left when I told you I was curious,
I never said that I was brave.
Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began ...
Oh, you are really such a pretty one.
I see you've gone and changed your name again.
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside,
to wash my eyelids in the rain!
Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began ...

And I can't believe I forgot to share this song. A personal favorite and how true it is even after all these years. ::)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Lin-a2lTelg

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

Thank you for sharing this song Sunstorm. I love Dance Me to the End of Love too. I agree. Hauntingly beautiful. Every one of his songs just resonate strongly with me. I have always been in awe of his genius.

His masterpieces will allow him to live on forever in our memories.

His music is sooo deep. He must have been a very deep soul. His poems, his lyrics are just as gorgeous as the melodies themselves. Among those musicians alive today, he was the one that touched my soul the deepest.

I stumbled upon this video for the first time last night as I was indulging in all things Leonard Cohen on youtube. "Insanely Beautiful" is right. (Apparently the dance sequences are from "Scent of a Woman, which I've never seen. I'm going to have to check it out. )

I'd urge anyone reading this thread to check out that link, a video rendition of "Dance Me to the End of Love." You won't be disappointed.

VrBeauty funny as I thought of you when I linked my favorite song.

I kept listening to it over and over. What a great tribute we are making.

Now listening to You want it darker over and over, it is haunting too. He had something that touched souls like no one else did in my opinion; the master of words, his out of this world voice and all together.
