Hi. After some debate about the cost of Leon''s work, I''ve decided that I was going to work with him to set my stone (2ct RB, awaiting arrival). I want to set the stone in a classic solitare (single claw) setting but I''d like the shank to be micropave or mushroom pave (haven''t decided yet). The picture on his site aren''t as clear/detailed as the other ring images on there

LINK

Here are my questions:

(1) does anyone have this setting? Are the pictures on here (I searched but couldn''t find any)
(2) which do people prefer: mushroom or micro pave? I want the band to be 1.8-2mm and look like it is made with minimal metal (diamonds are visible, but not a lot of platinum surrounding the stones)
(3) I have read some talk about being able to select different stones for the melee. What are my options and what are the advantages? I have seen some posts about opting for "single cuts" but I don''t know what they are or how they are better than the norm.

Thanks as always!!! I just want to be as specific as possible when coming up with a plan for the work.

Here''s a link to a setting with a shank that I like a lot: http://www.artofplatinum.com/4images/details.php?image_id=417

I thought it might be Diamondnut''s beautiful ring but it isn''t I don''t think that ring belongs to a PS''er I could be wrong though - stunning.

Diamondnut''s thread

You should check out Diamondnut''s thread. That''s the same style but with a thinner band that what you want.

I have the same style (401) but with a 1.3ct RB. I told Leon that I wanted a 1.6mm band and overall a very delicate ring and a smaller donut. It came out to be probably only 1.4mm but it''s still sturdy but delicate. It''s mushroom pave and you definitely can see the small diamonds and hardly any metal from the top view. I asked about single cut and he says he only recommends that for micropave work. I went with the regular full cuts.

Hope this helps.

Really helpful -- Thanks so much. What I was wondering about the 401 (what you can''t tell from pictures) is whether the shank has the same cathedral appearance as the classic solitaire. The ring in the link is incredible, but I need a cathedral type shank.

What made you choose mushroom over micro? Did you see them both before deciding?

You probably need to ask him to customize either 401 with cathedral or Leon's 311 with either mushroom or fishtail micropave.

For the look that you are going for, it's all micropave, just whether if it's mushroom or fishtail pave. I am not a fan of the "v" look from the side and therefore opted for mushroom micropave.

I also asked him why single cuts are not recommended when his website says that the 401 shank is micropave, he explained to me that only the really small micropave like 3 side shanks and etc, then single cut is recommended. He would still do it if you really want it.

I realized that the easiest way to deal with him is to give him a call. He has his preference and will state his honest opinions but will accommodate you if that's what you want.

Thanks again. I think I''m starting to get it -- mushroom pave has probably the most diamondy appearance and fishtail is the one that appears a bit metally from the side view (like can be seen on some of his angled pictures).

I def like the mushroom look and I''m thinking about going 1.8mm. I spoke with him already and told him I wanted the classic solitaire with pave and he told me he does it all the time as the 401. I guess there was a miscommunication in that his classic solitaire pave is 401 -- I was thinking that what made the classic solitaire the classic solitaire, was the cathedral element.

I''ll try to call back and explain that I really want to keep that look (it''s slightly different than the 311 b/c the solitaire has a less rounded cathedral; it''s more like this: / than this: C -- probably a poor way to explain the difference, haha.)

I hope I can convey that I want to add mushroom pave to his classic solitaire shape and he''ll be able to do that.
