Is there an ideal ratio range for an emerald?

Also, if the cut is certified to be VG, is that enough of an assurance that it''s going to be a well-cut stone or might it still not look that great in person?

Thanks!

It is said that the preferred ratio is 1.5 - 1.75, but actually, it''s really up to your own preference. I prefer 1.35 - 1.6...anything higher than that seemed too thin for me. I ended up with an EC ratio of 1.4.

A VG cut, in itself, may or may not be acceptable...really, you''re going to need to see it in person to see if it''s "the stone" for you!!

Good luck!

Hi El Bishop,
There''s no perfect shape for an emerald cut.
If it''s square, or close to it, it may look like an Asscher Cut- which can be extremely desirable.
The traditional shape is closer to the 1.4 which pleased AChiOAlumna- as well as many people who find the rectangular shape appealing.
The specifics of L X W are severely affected by the corners- and this is not indicatable on a report.

By the way, there''s no such a VG cut on a GIA report.
Remember- diamonds are NOT certified- rather they are submitted to gem labs which issue an identification report.

The premier gem lab- far and away, is GIA- who, at this point does NOT classify the cut of a diamond in judgemental terms.

So- anyone telling you they have a "certified VG cut Emerald Cut" is ......well..what''s a nice word for bull poop?

Hi,

Thanks for the responses.

Woudl you mind explaining in a little more detail what this means: "The specifics of L X W are severely affected by the corners- and this is not indicatable on a report."

And also, re "By the way, there''s no such a VG cut on a GIA report." - I thought that the symmetry and polish are an indication of the quality of the cut - I guess that is not so.

So the only real way to assess one of these stones is to see it in person and just decide if I like it or not - is that right?

Thanks again!

Hi,

Thanks for the responses.

Woudl you mind explaining in a little more detail what this means: ''The specifics of L X W are severely affected by the corners- and this is not indicatable on a report.'' What I mean is this: If an Emerald Cut has very small corners, it can have identical L x W as a diamond with large dramatic croners. The size of the corners has a huge impact on the look of an emerald cut- and there''s no way to tell anything about the corners off the GIA report.

And also, re ''By the way, there''s no such a VG cut on a GIA report.'' - I thought that the symmetry and polish are an indication of the quality of the cut - I guess that is not so. Correctamundo! GIA''s Polish and Symmetry do NOT equal "Cut"

So the only real way to assess one of these stones is to see it in person and just decide if I like it or not - is that right? IN person, or in a good digital photo, yes.

Thanks again!

Is there nothing on the lab reports which tell you about the corners, David? What is commonly regarded as normal for corners - small or large? Just curious.
