I''ve been looking at f lower girl dresses lately, and have started wondering about what length they should be (we''re having 3 flower girls, ages 4 to 8).

I''m wondering if long flower girl dresses will make the kids trip all over themselves, or if they''re ok. What do you guys think?

I think a variety of lengths would be fine but I probably go no longer then ankle length so feet are clear for walking.

A moment from my youth: I was in my aunt's wedding at 4, tripped over my long dress during the processional and knocked my front tooth out. (And, after that delayed the wedding about 10 minutes, I later went back during the ceremony to pick up all the pedals I had thrown down, because I thought it was messy. Surprisingly, my aunt still loves me!).

Moral of the story: Flowergirls should always wear tea length

ETA: 8 year olds may be better to wear longer dresses. Just make sure they aren't generally clumsy and are have experience wearing long dresses.

I''d go a bit shorter to be on the safe side. The last thing you want is one of them tripping down the aisle!

I''d go a bit shorter not just for safety but also for cleanliness. Even being closely supervised, children have a way of finding SOMETHING dirty somewhere and wearing it. The bottom of a long dress can quickly become FILTHY on a little kid! Besides...I think getting them cute little girly shoes that show is too adorable...did I mention that I was obsessed with shoes even when I was a toddler?

It''s not appropriate for a little girl to wear a floor-length gown, so knee-length or tea-length would be the proper length. IMO, it''s important for the girl(s) to not look like baby brides; children should look like children. If the dresses are to be white, a colored sash is a nice finishing touch.

Someone mentioned knee-length with the colored ribbonI think? I wore that same thing for my oldest sister''s wedding when I was the flower girl and I still think it was super cute (I still have my little flower wreath I carried hanging on my wall too). Here''s a picture of a flower girl smurfy. It''s from 1989 but I don''t think you can tell unless you look at my fluffy bangs haha

I love shorter dresses (tea length) on little girls. I love the look of lacy socks and cute little shoes.

ditto! seeing flower girls in mini wedding dresses weirds me out

Thanks, everyone for weighing in!

katamari - That''s hilarious! I can totally picture my 5 year old neice doing this -- it''s just too cute!

Deelight, neatfreak, doodle - I definitely hear you on the safety and cleanliness issues. My wedding is in the peak of winter, and I can see the bottoms of those dresses getting quite dirty, and if there is snow I can only imagine the possibilities

Smurfy - Is that you in the pic? How cute are you?!

swingirl - They are cute! It might be cool to have them wear socks with faux fur trim, with it being winter and all

kittybean, mimzy - ITA about children looking like children, and no mini brides. I just thought it would be fun for the kids to be princess for a day, where they can wear fancy, poofy dresses and tiaras. I suppose they can do that with ankle/tea length dresses as well.

Initially I wanted them to wear ivory dresses with burgundy sashes, but today I found the cutest tea length burgundy dress with gold details, and I''m now starting to change my mind about their dresses.

oooooohhhh I really like the burgundy dress!

That FG dress is gorgeous I think they are totally cute :)

My 6 year old daughter wore a floor length dress for my cousin''s wedding last month and she was adorable! She had no problems walking. It was a pink dress with pickups and it had a chocolate sash. She also had a tiara and I found her the perfect cinderella shoes; clear slippers with about a 1" heel. She loved being all dolled up. I think it really depends on your preference and how you think your flower girls would like to look and be more comfortable. For my wedding I want my daughter to be dressed up like me. She wanted the exact same dress as I got but I opted for something a touch different, yet very similar to mine. To each their own...

Our flower girls (3 and 6) had floor-length dresses (see image below). My mom made them and I didn't think to specify length, since she generally knows what she's doing with that kinda stuff, but I would have suggested tea length if I'd thought of it.

They didn't trip at all, and the older one refused to pick it up when she walked because she hated it and wanted to ruin it

. Anyway, they didn't get stepped on or tripped on, but the aforementioned older girl's dress did get quite wet on the bottom because of her refusal to lift it, and we had surprise SoCal rain on our wedding day.

So I'd venture to say that floor length may not actually be a problem, since that was my experience with them.
