So I finally bought the diamond for my fiance''s ring. She has picked out the ring setting, but we have to have it custom made. The diamond will be bezel set, so the bezel has to be pretty exact to the spread of the diamond. However, both me and my fiance are uneasy about leaving an $11k diamond with the setting maker for as long as it takes them to make it. When we were looking at premade settings, they had prongs for setting the diamond and the jewelers said we could be there when the diamond was actually set. The setting my fiance wants doesn''t have any prongs, so I think the setting has to be made pretty exact to the diamond. Even if they take a mold of the diamond I don''t see how they will be able to finish the setting without the actual diamond. What can i do?

This is the type of setting we are getting (not exact but the diamond sits inside the setting in the same way):

if the jeweler is reputable there is no reason to be worried. my diamond is currently spending 5 weeks with the designer having the setting made. just make sure you can verify your stone either by recognizing a blemish or birthmark (that we like to call them) so you can identify it when you pick it up. the jeweler you are working with should be happy to help you find a way to do this and make you feel comfortable.

Ditto! We do that around here all the time. Most of the designers keep the diamond for a few weeks. As long as you know the reputation of your ring maker, there should be no problems. Just make sure someone has the stone insured during the process.

This is a good time to get very familiar with your stone. Take a good look at the cert and verify the inclusion(s) with your jeweller. Also, note the dimensions of the stone. I expect the jeweller to be honest (that''s partially why you choose him/her, right?), but mapping the stone helps alleviate some of your worries about being sure that that is the same stone.

I needed my appraisal updated with my new setting when I sent mine in for reset, so I sent it to my appraiser first, he looked at it, took some pics of it unmounted (he removed it from the mounting for me), then sent it to the vendor (Wink/Ocean), they sent it back to him to complete the appraisal and as a side benifit I had some assurance that all was well. But I never would have picked a vendor in the first place that I had doubts about leaving my stone with. I have to send my ring in for repair to Ocean this week and I''m not sending it to an appraiser or anyone else first. I trust my vendor. I agree with the others about getting to know your stone and it''s inclusions, but mine is a PITA cause I can''t find my inclusions even with a loupe... so that''s another reason why I have my stone insured and I only use vendors I trust implictly.

agree with everyones answers, also alot of stones now have a laser inscription on them too.
my stone has been away for 2 months now and im starting to get worried! but if i didnt trust my jeweler i wouldnt have ever left
it with them
make sure you take pics of the final product!
