on my engagement diamond, there is a laser inscription identification number.. it''s on the GIA report as well.. does all GIA certified diamond have this? and if it doesnt, how much does it usually cost to get it done? does it actually increase the value of the diamond? and does the lasering affect the diamond itself (damage it in any way etc)?

Laser inscription is optional on all GIA graded diamonds with their main grading report and is included with the bundle on all stones with their dossier report (under 1.0cts). If it’s inscribed by a 3rd party before GIA got it, the inscription will be mentioned on the report and, obviously, if the inscription was put there after GIA looked at it, they won’t include it. It’s sort of handy for recognizing a particular stone should the need arise but it’s not necessary. Cost to have it done will vary depending on who you have do the work but the cost is generally nominal and has more to do with insured shipping to and from the laser shop than the cost of the work itself.

No, it doesn’t seem to have much affect on the prices people are charging for diamonds.

A laser inscription isn''t necessary to identify the stone provided you have the cert with all the attributes and with the inclusions mapped out etc. It sort of makes a finger print that makes your stone unique. I know I found a place via goggle that will do it and it wasn''t particularly expensive, but I can''t find it now... sorry.
