Laser Inscription (need advice)

Just a quick question on laser inscription on diamonds. I have a diamond that I''m about to buy with laser inscription. I''m concerned that it may be falsified. I''ve checked the diamond and it does have the incription GIA ######## on it but it seems as though it is inscribed on some sort of paper or something. Not sure how to descibe it. It seems as though it is covered and inscibed over the top of it. I''ve checked other inscriptions on the internet and the inscription is directly on the diamond.

I have to double check the incription now to make sure it''s directly on the diamond.

I don''t have a good feeling about this as my gut instinct tells me that it is not legitimate.

It does come with the GIA certificate but how legitimate is it? How would I know what is legitimate and what''s not in terms of GIA certificate and Laser inscripted diamond?

Who is it from? Get it independently appraised and only conclude the deal when it is verified by the appraiser.

An appraiser can verify several other information with what is on the report, such as inclusion location, color, weight, proportion. The girdle seem to be inscribe on a brunted girdle instead of a faceted girdle from your description.

If you mean the girdle of the diamond is dull then it is quite possible it is bruted. This link explains the process of bruting.

As to authenticity etc are you buying from a reputable vendor or is this is a private sale? If the latter then definitely get an independant appraiser involved.

Maybe someone was having a difficult time photographing the actual inscription and used a small piece of paper to imitate the actual engraving. I have not heard of such a thing, but often have my own problems making good photos of incsriptions.

The characteristics stated on a GIA diamond grading report (note that labs don''t "certify" anything...) can be verified using the online GIA Report Check which will enable you to determine whether the GIA issued a report with that number and whether the details indicated on the report that you have been shown match those issued by the GIA for that report number.

If the diamond was laser inscribed with the report number by the GIA at the time the diamond was being graded, the inscription should be indicated on the report check output page. However many diamonds are laser inscribed after they have been graded, in which case the GIA logo should not be present since only the GIA is authorized to inscribe their actual logo - there is some argument as to whether companies have the right to inscribe their diamonds with the letters GIA (not the actual GIA logo) when in fact the diamond has been graded by the GIA and the number inscribed on the girdle edge of the diamond matches that of the report issued by the GIA for that diamond...

Are you working with an online vendor? If so, it is pretty easy to validate the good standing of an online vendor using several methods including this forum.

And of course, you can make the sale contingent on verification of the characteristics of the diamond by an independent Gemologist / Appraiser of your choosing - see the Resources / Appraisers link at the top of this page for a list of appraisers. Note that many online vendors will send the diamond to a Gemologist of your choosing prior to the stone actually being purchased by you...
