Laser Inscribing Question

I ordered a ring last week and saw the GIA certificates that went with each of the stones(Center 1.01ct, side stones are .30ct ea). I told the jeweler that I wanted the laser inscription numbers visible when the ring was mounted so that I could verify they were the same stones he sold me. That instruction was written on the order itself so there would be no confusion when they were mounted. Now, I am being told by the jeweler that the laser inscription on the 1.01ct diamond is illegible. He said that this could be due to the polishing process, but that doesn't sound plausible to me. Does this sound reasonable to any of you diamond experts? I am going to look at the ring later today.

Many or even most diamonds don't have laser inscriptions so I wouldn't really worry about that. Just use a loupe and make sure the diamond matches the lab report. If you aren't confident about doing that, just take it to another jeweler who does appraisals and simply ask if they will verify that the stone is the one on the report.

I'd need a 30X loupe to see the inscription but then I am a old man.

When I purchased my diamond loose, it was brand new and the GIA inscription was clearly visible (the letters/numbers were outlined in black). After I had it set, the black outline was polished away and the inscription became white, which made it much harder to read.

I was able to read the inscription with a 10x loupe before the diamond was set, but had to go to a local jeweler (who used a microscope) to read the inscription after it was set.

The jeweler who set my diamond said that this sometimes happens with GIA/AGS inscriptions. The black outline can turn white after polishing.

Perhaps the diamond had been polished a couple of times before and the inscription has been worn down? Like DS suggested, it's probably best to take it to an appraiser to verify that the stone matches the report.
