Hi guys,

I was looking at a GIA cert, and found labeled as an inclusion, a "Laser Drill Hole". Has anyone ever seen that on a diamond, and what caused that?

Thanks.

Do you have a link to the stone?

Laser drilling is done to remove inclusions, but I didn't think GIA graded clarity enhanced stones??? All I know is that I wouldn't buy a diamond with a hole in the table! Hopefully one of the appraisers can answer your question!

There is a procedure where certain diamonds that have a black spot can have it "beached"

A laser is used to drill a channel to the carbon spot. The diamond is then soaked in sulfuric acid which turns the black spot white.
GIA views this as an added facet, and therefore will issue a clarity grade on such stones.

Very interesting...thanks for explaining, David!

I have seen that on several GIA grading reports. But it is best not to purchase diamonds with that notation.

Why? If the treatment is permanent better the bleached, less-obvious bogey, no?

I was just about to ask the same thing Yssie ( PS perverted minds think alike I guess)

Seriously- there's a shoe for every foot. Some people want large, yet have a limited budget.
Even filled stones- which I would never own personally- have their fans.

The problems come from the way things are represented, far more than either filling or drilling. I've seen a lot of sites, and stores who carry these stones and don't properly educate consumers

If a consumer is made aware of the implications- and has seen firsthand what they're buying, it's probably too harsh to rule out such things offhand.

Hi,

Attached is the GIA cert for the diamond in question. A friend who has a friend in the business is offering this diamond for 22k. Is this a good deal for a 2.62 carat VS2 I color round brilliant?

With all due respect, I think there is something wrong with your Adobe Acrobat Reader as I have experienced that before but it opens fine for me when opening it. Alternatively, you can download and view the cert directly on GIA's website at http://www.gia.edu/reportcheck Report # is 2135613648. Carat weight is 2.62.

BTW, how do I upload photos on PS?
