If I have 2 stones - one is cushion and one is a round brillant, both are F colour, VS1 clarity and are around 1.5ct. Given all proportions are average (if there is such a thing!) , what would give me a larger spread for a halo setting - the cushion of the round??

Thankyou

You need to compare the physical diameters of each diamond to know that, a well cut round diamond of 1.5cts should spread around 7.4- 7.5mm - a 1.5 cushion could vary from this depending on the cut and face up spread.

Hi again Lorelei - I can always depend on you for advice - thankyou for your valuable time!

I am in such a delimna.........I''m trying to replace a 2ct princess cut that was chipped. I am totally over Princess cuts so that rules them out!

I have looked at ovals due to their larger spread for the money you pay - a jeweller found me 2, but I am unable to see them and although she states that they have no bowties, one of the pics tells me otherwise, and I am worried about that, so I have decided not to run the risk.

I have then looked at cushions, but 2 jewellers in Sydney have told me that they are very difficult to source over 1ct In Australia at the moment as merchants are limiting their imports of larger size stones due to the economic crisis. One has sourced two but they are G colour, and I only want E or F.

So, I am now thinking that I should just stick to rounds to be safe, even though they attract a premium in price........ahhhhhhhh all I want is a beautiful engagement ring back on my finger......

So, I will continue researching, I just wish I had access to the resources and availability as the US!!!

Thankyou again Lorelei!

Hi bugaboo,

I know we''ve had many from out of the country buy from here in the US, and I believe it''s almost always cheaper. I''m wondering why you couldn''t do the same?

Cushion depth varies greatly. I'm looking at 2 cushions where one has a 63% depth and the other with a 68% depth. If you want the cushion to look it's weight, go for one that has a depth in the low 60's to have it comparable in face up size with a round. RBs are generally in the very low 60's depth.

Most welcome! Also concerning depth in fancy shapes, the depth % doesn't always relate to face up spread like it does with rounds as cushions and other fancies can hold weight in other ways, so go by the diameters to get the best indication of face up size.

So sorry about your other diamond!

Just a thought, a couple of places you can try in Australia -

www.jogiadiamonds.com

www.hollowaydiamonds.com

Thankyou ellen, chrono (I marvelled at your cushion beauties!!) and Lorelei!

I have tried Jogia and Holloway already, thanks for the tip though. I have emailed Sarah at GOG and she has replied regarding their signature chunky cushions, so I am seriously looking at going down this path, just have to find all the costs of importing!

Thankyou for the tips!
