question - does $30k sound like a lot for an EGL princess ~ 4 SI1 I color, or am I just completely naive?!

I realize we are looking for a rare size but I really prefer to buy diamonds with prices that are already published on the Internet.

They decide on that price based on competition and know full well if they price it too high it won''t sell.

That makes me feel comfortable that the published price is likely to be a fair price.

I''m not a very trusting soul.

But if I call a vendor and give them specs to find a diamond for me I''m just going to be nervous that because the price is conveyed to me privately not publicly they may put a higher price on it.

I just prefer transparency.

I know, I know.

Shame on me for not trusting.

Agree. I try to look up the same cert at different stores to compare their prices, but that would be alittle harder to do when talking with someone - atleast until they send the cert for you to see (and see the #).

Just had to post a comment...
I appreciate all of the help and advise, but I decided to go with a local jeweler - he showed me stone after stone (after stone after stone...!) and I have gone from round to princess to now an asscher (which is what I always wanted anyway) and found one I would never have picked because it "didn''t look good on paper". It''s a very white J/SI1 that is just gorgeous. I am now a true believer that you have to see it first before you can comfortably commit - and the internet is a FABULOUS tool to use to negotiate!
Can''t wait to post pics : )

Congratulations on your decision!!

Thank you thank you!
I think I got lucky with this asscher, even with specs not exactly "ideal" : )
