I noticed from many sites that GIA reports for diamonds under 1 carat often do not have inclusion plots.
I heard that GIA stopped putting inclusion plots on smaller diamonds to make the certification process cheaper.
Should I not expect them on diamonds under 1ct ?

Does the presence or absence of it say anything about the diamond or the jeweler?

Please let me know your thoughts on this.
Thanks

GIA produces several types of lab report. The one with the plot (GIA Diamond Grading Report) is slightly more expensive than the one without (GIA Diamond Dossier), and the laser inscription is extra on the DGR but included in the price of the DD. The DD is only available for diamonds below 2.00 ct.

I wouldn''t take the absence of the plot as a sign of anything; the difference in price is about $20-25 (by the time you have put the laser inscription cost in) - the person who sent the diamond to the lab probably came to a judgment that for that stone the inscription is more desirable than the plot as an identification device.

As stated by Old Man Coyote, the version of GIA report that you are referring to is known as a GIA Diamond Dossier and it relies on an inscription of the corresponding lab report number inscribed on the girdle edge of the diamond for identification purposes rather than a plotting diagram of the inclusions. The type of inclusions found within the diamond are referenced on the document however under the heading "clarity characteristics" such as crystal, cloud, pinpoint, feather, etc. and should be taken into consideration. The order the inclusion types are listed are stated in the order that they affect the clarity grade of the diamond, so if the inclusions are listed as feather, crystal, cloud, then the feather is the primary grademaker and the crystal and cloud are less prominent.

Note that the seller of the diamond should be able to provide you with insight into the location and extent of the inclusions regardless of whether you are purchasing the diamond from and online vendor or a brick and mortar jewelry store. Can you get clarity photographs of the inclusions and a copy of the GIA Diamond Dossier and post it here for further review?

The GIA Diamond Dossier should contain a side profile diagram of the outline of the diamond and provide measurements such as the total depth, table diameter, crown and pavilion angle of the diamond and these measurements provide insight into the potential visual performance of the diamond. You can punch the numbers from the Dossier into the Holloway Cut Advisor found here on Price Scope under the Tools heading on the tool bar at the top of this page and additional insight can be provided by other people here on the forum. Hope this helps...
