I'm getting married in about a year and have been thinking about wedding dresses a lot. I currently have one from JCrew (the Sophia) that is very nice and simple and I would be perfectly happy getting married in it.

However, there's a Vineyard Collection dress I can't get out of my head. I think it's beautiful and I know it's a shape and length that would look really good on me (admittedly, I haven't been able to try it on yet, so we'll have to be theoretical). I love that it's simple and casual but has nice details. If I were having a spring or summer wedding I would think it's perfect, but I can't forget that my wedding is in late September. Do you think this dress would be completely inappropriate? I could certainly get some kind of shawl or something to keep me warm, so I'm not worried about that so much ... But would people look at me and say "What was she thinking wearing that in the fall?"

What do you all think? I haven't bought the dress, so feel free to be perfectly honest

I think you should do what you want. So what if other people say "why is she wearing that in the fall?" If they want to nitpick over what you look like, I feel sad for them that they feel the need to do this, instead of being happy for you and enjoying your day. Most of the traditional "you can't wear white after Labor Day" type of fashion rules are no longer applicable in this day and age. That dress is gorgeous. If that's what you have your heart set on, go for it.

In my opinion, the sophia dress is a more timeless, classic look while the vineyard dress looks more like a party dress. If that doesn''t bother YOU then I wouldn''t worry about anyone else''s opinion. It could be really cute with a little bolero.

I think the J Crew dress is rather dull in comparison to the Vineyard dress, which is fabulous! Depending on where you live and what kind of wedding you''re having, you might be cold . . . but I don''t think it looks inappropriate at all. You should at least try it on and see if it''s wonderful on you!

I love the vineyard dress! Does it ''go'' with you venue? I would worry about that more than being bare legged in late September.

If you can''t stop thinking about it, you should definitely try it on (and post pictures)!

Somehow I knew you guys would tell me to get whatever makes me happy

I really need to try it on before I get too into it, but I'm glad you all think that it would be ok for September. For some reason, I just can't see myself in a long white gown ... I love everyone else's choices, but I haven't seen anything that really grabbed me. My wedding will be pretty casual and focused on the party part with only a very short ceremony, so I guess the big white dress feels out of place. Plus I haven't loved how I've looked in more traditional wedding gowns, but I love how I look in knee length skirts and dresses with fitted tops (I like my calves I guess

I'm glad you guys think it's fabulous too! I'm going to look around for somewhere I can try it on.

ETA: The October issue of Modern Bride has this dress on the cover. I saw it in the drugstore yesterday and it made me start thinking about this dress again and how much I love it

I just went to a September wedding where the bride had a knee length dress and I didn''t think it was odd at all. Actually the first thing I noticed were her fabulous shoes because for the first time ever I could actually see a bride''s shoes.

She seemed comfortable and happy. Judging from the number of compliments I heard her get about how amazing her dress was, I do not think people were the least bit phased.

If you love it - go for it!!

Yes! Thank you, I forgot to mention about the shoes. I could go all out with fabulous shoes if I had a dress like this that would show them off.

I luuuuurve the Vineyard dress. If I could do it again, I''d definitely pick something like it.

If the weather allows, go for it! I got married outdoors in late September of last year and the temperature was in the low 80s.

I don''t think it would look odd for a September wedding. It''s so often warm in September (sometimes hot!), that it feels more like summer than fall. As long as your vibe isn''t super-formal (which I gather it''s not from the J. Crew gown), I say go for the Vineyard dress if you love it. It''s pretty fabulous

Definitely go for it if it will match the feel of your wedding! It is a very beautiful dress... the seaming on the front(i think that's what it is on the bodice) adds a really nice touch

I think a knee length dress would be beautiful!! My cousin is actually wearing one for her wedding next July. Maybe you could casually mention something about a knee length dress to your FI to hear his reaction. Also, have you seen this casablanca? I saw it in store about a month ago and it''s gorgeous in person. Anyway, best of luck!

Aggiebling09, that dress is gorgeous! I''ll have to add that to my list of things to try on.

Luckily for me, FI doesn''t care what I wear and he said I''ll be beautiful not matter what

Though I guess that''s what he''s supposed to say, right?
