Would really love some good wishes for our current foster mummy, Turtledove.

I noticed she was off her food the last couple of days, but chalked it up to the fact that I had run out of her super posh wet food and she was stuck with her normally posh dry food. I literally just hadn't had the time to get to the store and get more wet stuff, so thought she could suffer through. That made her eating drop off probably around Sunday night/Monday morning.

Then yesterday I was gone all day, she was normal in the morning before I left, as I had uni orientation, plus work til 9 pm. I got home and DH said he thought she had vomited in the laundry. Went in, looked like vomit - clear, tinted green, so assumed bile. It was immediately obvious that she wasn't feeling well. She usually JUMPS up to see whoever goes in the laundry, but she was lethargic and had visibly lost weight already. While I was visiting with her, she used the litter box and it became obvious that the water-like substance on the tiles was poo, not vomit. :nono:

I boiled up a chicken breast for her - she wouldn't touch it. Tried canned tuna, wouldn't touch it. Her favorite wet kitten food, wouldn't touch it. ;(

Thankfully I have some Ensal left from when the kittens gave my dog their Salmonella infection, which is a binding medicine suitable for both cats and dogs. I gave her the lower dose last night (poor thing - the stuff tastes like ground chalk dust!), and got her to drink some water at least. She was still unhappy this morning, only drinking if really forced, more Ensal.

Tonight she is a bit better, but she has already lost so much weight. I can feel her backbone! I've consulted the vet and he says to continue what I'm doing - get her bound up with Ensal, keep her fluid intake up, and offer her ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in order to get some nutrition into her. I went to the shops and came home with nine different kinds of wet food.

And then, you know you're a crazy cat lady when..., I sat on the floor of the laundry and hand fed her for two hours tonight. She got through about 3/4 of a can of wet cat food (turkey was the winner). She's more alert and responsive, purring. I've given her another dose of Ensal and am leaving her to rest for the night. Poor thing, still nursing three fat kittens while feeling like absolute rubbish. :blackeye:

I'd appreciate any and all good wishes for her. I am hoping she manages to shake whatever this is very, very soon (yes, I'm taking her poo to work tomorrow to check for Salmonella). It is so taxing on her body to be nursing and unable to eat. After the traumatic loss of Trifecta, I'm having a hard time not panicking, but the vet reassured me that this is the best way to proceed for now. If she doesn't resume eating properly in the next 24 hours, I'll have to consider supplement bottle feeding the little ones to give her body a break.

I SO hope this isn't Salmonella. If it is, what am I going to do? I don't want to give up fostering, but I can't put all of these cats at risk by being in my infected house! ;(

JG, sorry to hear that Turtledove is ill. At least you got her to eat something. 3/4 of a can is quite a lot for a cat to eat when under the weather. Is it still unbearably hot there? could it be at least in part because of the weather? If it might be salmonella or any infectious thing are the kitties at risk from nursing? If they are not ill too, then perhaps this could be some feline post partum depression, exacerbated by the heat. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I'm trying to be optimistic that it turns out to be something minor, not that ppd is minor, but at least not infectious.
Some special anti-microbial dust is coming your way!

Oh dear! :(( Sending turtledove and you tons and tons of healthy PS ***dust***!!!! I hope she gets better soon JG. Hugs to you both!

Awww! Dust! Truckloads!

You're doing the right thing! I know how nerve wracking it is, my pooch wouldn't eat or drink while sick. I read that rubbing sugar water on their gums helps stimulate the appetite and it seems to work. Good luck!!!

JG-SO sorry to hear sweet Turtledove isn't feeling well!!!

I just have a second, so haven't researched anything about it---but we just lost our beautiful boy last month to what was presumed pancreatic cancer and we tried everything to keep him eating.

One great thing we came up with was B12 shots-it stimulates eating, helps with anemia and of course gives them a nice energy boost. At first we got it from out Vet and gave the injection at home, then the Vet gave us a script and and we now have lots of left over at home.

As stated I have not done any research about giving it while having a possible GI infection or while nursing-but I thought it was worth a mention as it is very safe and works extremely quickly!!! Good Luck! I would begin with a higher dose and drop off since it is water soluble.

aww. the poor kitty..
you are such a wonderful mom~ Hope she feels well soon which I'm sure will happen with your care =)

I don't have any other ideas, but I'm sending you lots of dust. You are doing such a wonderful thing fostering these kitties. When Margaret's stomach is on the fritz I can usually get her to eat meat baby food. Because of the onion content, though, I use it only as a last resort.

Sending prayers her way!

Oh no. Lots of good wishes and dust for Turtledove! Can you give her sub-q injections? Might be easier than syringe feeding water. Poor thing. :(

Now we've gone too far the other way - no toileting! Poor thing was asleep in the litter box when I got up this morning. Did a bit of scratching, a bit of meowing, no real action. That means no more Ensal, and have mixed canned pumpkin with the wet food she is now consenting to eat. That should regulate her - pumpkin is digestively magic! She IS eating now, but gets distracted and leaves every time one of the kittens makes a peep. Surely mothering duties should take a back seat to self-preservation!...

I considered that, but now she's back on wet food I think her chances of dehydration are slim. Now I need to get some nutrients into her!

Tons and tons of dust coming your way, Ginger! I really hope it's not salmonella! Are you planning to have her evaluated by a vet?

Poor sweet mama! Is there any way you can separate her from the kittens when you feed her, or will she not have it? Sending SO MUCH DUST that she'll continue to eat and gain weight! You're doing everything you can do and following doctor's orders, so don't feel bad!

Awwww, poor thing!

Dust to you and your kitty!

Thank you everyone - our sweet Turtledove is feeling markedly better this evening! :appl:

She has slammed down 4 sachets of Royal Canin wet kitten food mixed with pumpkin since I got home after work, is pouncing on anyone who enters her lair, and spent an hour on the floor with me, curled up on my lap and rubbing noses.

PS dust is the BEST!

:appl: :appl: :appl:

More pics when you feel like it. :praise:
