Our wedding anniversary is coming up and DH has been hankering for a e-book reader. After doing a ton of research, he's settled on a Kindle 2 with 3G. He likes the DX but doesn't want to spring for it and I'm thinking about getting him one as a present. If you have a DX, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

What does he mostly read?

And where is he gonna use it? At home? When he's out and about, like if he rides the bus or something? At work?

I use my Kindle 2 at home and work (for breaks) mostly. So I like the small portable size and wouldn't want the DX. It fits nicely in my purse or my winter coat's pocket.

I'm watching this thread with interest, because I went to order myself a Kindle yesterday and they're all out of stock (Amazon UK). I wondered if fate was giving me a second chance to wait for the DX ;))

If he's only reading regular books, no pictures, and not needing to make a lot of notations, and won't use the PDF function, I'd say smaller Kindle. As noted, it's much more portable.

I have not seen the DX, but I have a decent sense of the size from the description on the website. I would not want to leisurely read with a device of that size. Plus I think it's still overpriced for what it is. Heck, even the regular Kindle is STILL overpriced in my book. I think $99 is the right price, given you don't get much of a break from book prices anymore.

Also, HOW does he read? I read curled up in bed or on the couch...I think a smaller device comes in handy there. If he's sort of properly sitting and doesn't mind reading with two hands like a newspaper, then maybe the DX would be fine.

I believe there are more cover options for the 6". And IMHO, a cover is absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the responses so far!

TGal, I think he'll primarily use it for books. Though I don't know if it'll come in handy for work. He's a 4th grade teacher and maybe he'll want to use it to download lesson plans. He reads in bed and probably on the couch, like you. Do you have the Kindle 1? If he doesn't use it for work, do you think that's sufficient for his purposes?

LGK, he'll probably use it mostly at home. Thanks for the thoughts re portability.

Jen, yes, I saw that Kindle 2 is sold out right now. I'm using that to stall DH while I figure out what to get him!

I have the Kindle 2, international.

For simple reading, it's awesome. Plus it has the page turnining button on BOTH sides. The DX has it only on one side, which is a deal breaker for me.

Yup. This.

I adore the Kindle 2, it is the perfect size for me and I don't require anything special in terms of software for it. If he has really big hands, *maybe* he might appreciate the DX more. If he wants to read textbooks, the DX again might be a better idea simply because the bigger screen allows less page turning. For simple reading, definitely the Kindle 2. My husband has said he'd like the Kindle 2, and he has colleagues who have that version too.

Im getting a Kindle2 in a couple of weeks for my birthday - sooooooooooo excited  i think for books the DX would be too big, after all its bigger than a standard book is....

I have the international/3G Kindle 2, which I love. As in, I cannot tell you how much I adore that thing. The size is absolutely perfect. I really wouldn't want it to be any bigger, and I think the DX would be too big for me. Like TGal said, the page-turning button on both sides is critical.
