kenny is this for you?

It's the diamond version of an everlasting gobstopper!

It reminds me of your avatar TL, like a diamond octahedron turned insideout!

That is seriously cool! :sun:

It's pretty small though and uncut. Cutting a diamond and the rough lost, accounts for much of the higher price of diamonds in excess of half a carat. You can find small diamond crystals for very low prices, relatively speaking, next to their cut counterparts. This is a cool specimen though, and the color is very nice. Because of the way it looks, you won't get much yield out of that stone, and it's best to leave it uncut.

The extremely unusual crystal form looks like john dyer on acid.
Do you think it will darken much in a bezel?

i think it was described as a crystal and not rough for several reasons.

eta: what an interesting idea! set it "as is" in crystal form. could be very interesting depending on the shank.....i'm thinking mokume gane.

I dont think anyone would even want to cut it. The very unusual crystal form is at least half of what makes it so special.

Totally funky like Nature had one too many drinks or acid trips.

more or less the point of my original post.........it was never meant to be "rough" to be cut.

I love mokume. Do you think it could be an all white mokume?

Well, I know it's not a diamond, but if you want to go bigger, here's a chrysoberyl crystal.

That's a great crystal! Very rare to find intact with 6 arms.

I bought the diamond

That's so interesting, I can't wait to see what you do with it!
You need to set it in a little gimble so you can appreciate it from all angles

So it can gyre and gimble in the wabe?

Funny, Mrs Gimbel was my next door neighbor growing up, yet I never thought of her as an act of a Tove until now.

you bought it!!!! congrats. i think it is well worth the $ if for no other reason that it is very unusual and you're certainly not going to see another like for a very long time.

no, i don't see all white mokume......i think it needs a wee bit of the yellow and/or even copper running through the metal to give the "grain" look.

What an unusual shape.
That's a rough diamond crystal?

Cool.

Congrats on such a cool purchase. It can even "sit" on its own quite well.

That is a great crystal and I'm really glad you bought it. I'm also with Mike on the gimble - definitely need to see it from all sides when set. I'm assuming it can be partially drilled on two opposing sides? Rather than drilled all the way through?

Fantastic!

Looks like a lemon-flavored gummy starfish.

I have a plan. there will be 2 axes of rotation, a double gimble if you will. Additionally there will be a sort of reflector, and an objective that folds away. There will be no drilling.

A very interesting design though I'm not sure how wearable it is :naughty:

starzin, i love love love that ring you posted!

VapidLapid, interesting design. appears rather high. assume that is because of wanting to show detail? i think i've seen something similar as steam punk....which i love, too.

Great design Mr VapidLapid, I can't wait to see this finished, please keep us posted with your progress.

Have you thought about making a squared off bottom to the band so that the ring would be free standing, it would make a great desk ornament when it's not being worn.

I don't know about that - it appears to be better suited as a stone display stand rather than a ring, when one thinks of the practicality of wearing it.

Thank you Mike. I don't think is is easy to see in the small sketch, but The lever on the left between the outer ring and the post goes down to a lens (to be made of topaz). The lever it attached to an arm (there is one from each of the outer joints) at the end of the arms is double bezel like ring that retains the lens. In the down position the lens nests inside the parabolic reflector. The diamond is located at the focus of the paraboloid. Pressing down on the lever swings the lens up for viewing the 3 mm diamond.

Of course it is not practical.
That is not really a criterion for me, ever really. It is not a ring for wearing while gardening. or even something you could put a jacket on over. But if you are lost in the desert in Nevada and need to send and receive messages to/from your alien mothership across the universe and then open a wormhole in the continuum you'd be wanting this.

Thanks for the suggestion about the flat base Mike, I will incorporate that in my plan.
