I got engaged 2 months ago. Here''s my problem. Fiance gave me a ring that is .30 in a solitaire tiffany 6 prong setting. Not a bad looking diamond, its eye clean but has no Cert. Let''s just say, no research went into his process of finding this ring. Fiance lives in North Carolina which is where the ring purchase was made. I live in New Jersey. He''s been a full time student there and will finish in a week and we''ll be living together in NJ! Yippie.
So he knows I am a little unhappy more with the setting than the diamond. I''m a hairstylist and the prongs are catching on hair every time I shampoo someone. The profile is high, so when I put on gloves to apply color the prongs poke thru. So I''m lurking around here for info as to what to do. As soon as the fiance'' moves here and finds a job(please pray) he and I will choose a new setting and perhaps a new stone depending on the job. But question is, do I go back to North Carolina and upgrade with the jeweler he used or do I just keep this ring and start from scratch?

What do you think of a bezel setting or semi bezel for my work issues?

It sounds like a bezel would definitely be the way to go. I love the Sholdt semi-bezel, if that''s a style you''d entertain ....

As for what to do with the old ring, it depends: are you sentimental enough to want to keep it for the symbolism/memory? Will the original jeweler agree to a trade, and do you think they''ll have something you want?

A bezel or some other way to have the diamond set flush, without prongs, is the way to go. I suggest that you use someone local to you rather than go back to where neither of you will be living shortly.

That was a great bezel thread. Thanks for the info. I hate that we have to go into NYC to see Sholdt rings. Since I don''t wear much jewelry, i''m not really sure what I will like. I just know I don''t like what I have. Its kinda like wedding dress shopping....until you try it on you never know if you''ll like it on you. Just can''t decide if I like the look of full bezel or semi.
These are the ones I am fondest of:

here is just my personal opinion as I have reset my ring five times now, and I have a few other bezels. I really like the profile of a semi bezel on diamonds and you can truly see the fire while driving and get mesmerized as well as see like across an infinite pool of ice so to speak (not recommended...lol), so that is my favorite look on a diamond setting is a semi bezel or even tension/faux tension set, however I love the look ofFULL bezels on colored stones and I'm not too worried about seeing any fire (which I don't see) on the girdle of colored stones. Hope that makes sense. You have to determine what is important? Ilove to see the spark as much as I can from a diamond since they give such an array of rainbow colors of flashes and brillance so I want to maximize my view of the diamond without prongs which to me is a semi bezel or tension set.

Does the idea of putting my diamond in a full bezel setting take away from my diamond''s sparkle? Will a .30 get lost in that setting? Will it be letting less light in if set in bezel style and maybe this is just the best possible setting for this diamond and I should leave it be, since I have no idea what I have?

I think the bezel will make the diamond look bigger and for your occupation it will be perfect!

If your diamond is well cut then It wont take the sparkle away from the top view of the diamond, you are covering the diamond''s girdle, and at the slightes edge I still see sparkle so essentially you cover up the girdle and you won''t see any sparkle. I have a .30 ct earrings each and full bezel it, it looks amazing, andmakes it appear larger too. see picture those earrings are .30 carat each along side my Engagement ring of 1.21 carat.

Well being there''s no cert and I''m a newbie at viewing diamonds, I can''t really tell if the cut is good. The diamond has nice sparkle, but it does have a slightly jagged edge near one of the prongs. Its not visible and my jeweler had to use his loop to see it. He said it was just natural to the diamond. I thought I had chipped it at work. I only noticed it because I''m anal since finding this site. Does that mean its not a great cut?

Thanks for all the great info. I think I''m leaning toward half bezel. Even though I think it might be bad feng shui to break up the fluidness of the full bezel.

Oh, I bet your jeweler meant your diamond has a natural, meaning it''s a bit of the diamond''s original skin left on the girdle. It''s defiitely not something that''s considered detracting from a stone unless it''s absolutely huge. I have an antique cut diamond with four naturals- basically it''s an indication that the cutter used every last possible bit of the octagonal rough to make the finished diamond.

I think bezels are the bee''s knees on any size diamond. I recently reset my e-ring to one, and adore it. It is so nice to not catch it on stuff, it cleans just fine (which I''d worried about actually), and it does make the stone look a bit bigger IMO. And I really love seeing the whole pattern of the diamond- you don''t really realize how the prongs keep you from doing that, until you see it without them.

My original setting was a 6 prong too, and working in the medical field I am constantly putting on gloves to the point where I had to wear the ring around my neck or tied onto my scrub pants at times. I should have bezeled it YEARS ago but didn''t even really think of it as an option. The final straw came however when my 2 month old baby flung his head forward and caught his cheek on the prong of my ring and cut himself. It took me about 2 seconds to start shopping for a new setting after that haha. <3 my bezel now!
